Habari Gani HBCU Scholarships

I am starting this scholarship as an Educator’s attempt to help high school graduates who have committed to attend an HBCU offset some of their cost for college.  My name is Tami'ka Jones and as a first-generation college graduate, {that's me in the middle with the plaid-print top}.  I remember clearly DAILY worrying about the next semester or the next year and how was I going to pay for my next semester of coursework.

I am a High School College and Career Educator who works with high school seniors.  Last year, I was excited to work specifically with dual enrollment students.  These students decided to apply, test and pass the college admission exam & and later spent their entire high school senior year away from their high schools in order to be a full-time college student.  These students are special because they are not at their HS for one of the monumental times of their HS lives even though they are not excluded from their HS completely they are however not in the building with their HS peers.  Ordinarily, dual enrollment students are transitioned into college life but not my students.  We work together in order to find a balance between high-school life and college-life and I am extremely proud of them every year for their focus and tenacity.

The graduating class of 2019 was charged with embarking on a new academic experience - to complete their HS diploma while also completing up to 24 college credits and 95% of them did just that and 100% of 63 students graduated with a high school diploma AND up 30 college credits.  The cost of college rapidly grows year after year.  Can you imagine being a graduating HS graduating senior and getting accepted to the college/university of your choice?  Now, can you imagine not being able to attend the college of your choice because of a financial gap.  Your support will enable students attending an HBCU to receive some relief in order to continue matriculating at their HBCU of choice.  Last year, there were 7 students who attended an HBCU & it is my goal to be able to award each of them with a $1,000 scholarship extending me to request an amount to raise of $7,000.  I have received most of the grades from my former students and all have passed their 1st year with nothing less than a ‘C’.  Students are currently attending Hampton University, Xavier University (2 students), Morgan State University, Clark Atlanta University, Howard University, and Virginia State University.

Skepticism and Hesitation is a Real Emotion, so please rest on knowing that GoFundMe has a GoFundMe Guarantee Program to help elevate against fraud and is in place as a security blanket for you the giver.  Crowdfunding is an awesome way for my students to increase their opportunity of attending college with the much needed, financial assistance, whether through textbook money support, or a minimum amount of $1,000 each (or more) to close some of the financial gap.

Receiving these funds by July, 2020 and awarding the individual scholarships by the beginning of the new academic school year, August 2020, will be a tremendous relief to my students.  Thank you in advance for investing in our future leaders.  It is my goal to be able to continue these efforts annually and to be able to request funding from organizations and business in the future.
