Hi all,
My name is David and my wife and I have a 2001 Saab 95 with 250,000 miles on the odometer. I was driving home from purchasing pellets for our pellet stove the Friday after Christmas. About three and a half miles from home the car started running a bit rough so I immediately pulled into a gas station / mini mart and shut the engine off. I popped the hood and noticed a bit of oil had blown out the filler tube – not a good sign. I closed the hood and called AAA. The car was towed to the shop where the car has been maintained since I purchased it more than five years ago. Monday, I received a call from Del (the owner of Del’s Automotive) informing me that I had burned a hole in a piston. Faced with a decision to repair or replace the car My wife and I have decided to go the repair route. Ebay motors has several good used engines for sale ranging from $750 - $1,500 to purchase and ship to Del. By the time we drive the car home it will probably cost $3,000 - $3,500. The reason we decided to repair the car is because it is without doubt the finest, best engineered, and best built vehicle either of has ever owned. We live on my wife’s income and my retirement. We don’t go out to restaurants or make unnecessary purchases. I do the cooking and my wife takes her lunch with her to work. When we don’t have unexpected expenses we can put up to about $100 into savings in a month. Every time we get a few hundred dollars in savings we incur some unexpected expense that wipes out the savings and we start over. We need to raise about $3,500 to get our beloved Saab back on the road. Getting our Saab back on the road is especially important because, among other reasons, transit service is poor at best in Suquamish.
