Nia's Study Abroad Trip- Peru

My name is Nia Doaks and I am a sophomore at North Carolina State University. I am majoring in Communication and currently pursuing a double minor in Spanish and Business Administration. I am extremely involved on N.C. State's campus-- I am Managing Editor of the Nubian Message, a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a member of the W.E.B. Du Bois Honors Society, a member of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences- Multicultural Association of Students, and a Peer Mentor. I have been on the Dean's List since my first semester at N.C. State and spent my last summer interning at AICPA in Chapel Hill.
As displayed by my campus involvement and academic excellence, I have always been extremely ambitious. Since entering into N.C. State I have known that I wanted to study abroad. I believe that having cultural competence and being exposed to different situations and environments would be key to my growth and development as a person. I love the Spanish language and culture and would be ecstatic to further my understanding through traveling to South America.
The Study Abroad program to Peru that my school is offering, led by one of my current professors, would be an amazing opportunity. One quote that I have come to live by is "Be the change you wish to see in the world"-Mahatma Ghandi. Along with furthering my education, helping other people has always been a passion of mine. Not only would I be able to take classes that allow me to almost complete my Spanish minor, I would also be able to travel and help others while abroad. This program allows us, as students, to participate in a two-week community service program at a local elementary school in Peru.
Experiences as amazing as these, unfortunately, do not come easy. I have worked incredibly hard to get where I am now and want to continue to improve myself and learn as much as I can while I have the opportunity. I would love to bring back the experiences and knowledge that I gain abroad and translate it into my work and leadership positions on State's campus. Please help me to reach my goal-- any donation, large or small, would be incredibly helpful. Thank you so much!
