I am seeking help for my brother, David D’Amour. David, now 44 years old, has been in a wheel chair since he was 18. He dove into Chestermere lake and broke his neck and became a Quadriplegic, meaning his paralysis has affected all four limbs. Fortunately, he is able to move his arms, but has limited mobility of his hands.
David has lived a very active lifestyle despite his medical conditions that are part and parcel of living life in a chair. Many of you either know him from personal experiences through his work in the community or for his love of Dogs. He has played an active role in helping new injuries get back out in the community and live active lives; he has done public speaking on injury awareness and prevention, played wheel chair rugby for team Alberta and has even been sky diving!
Living this active life style has taken a major toll on his body. He lives in constant pain. The tendons in his arms are ripping away from his elbows from the constant strain of using his arms as we would our legs. Unfortunately, after numerous surgeries to try and fix the problem, surgery is no longer an option. This means that he will now have to go into a power wheel chair. To someone who is not in a wheel chair, you may not understand the mental and financial implications of such a transition. This greatly reduces a person’s freedom and mobility. It changes their identity from being an active person in a wheel chair to someone whose body is rapidly deteriorating. Financially it means that he will have to purchase a new and very expensive wheel chair. It also means that he can no longer drive his truck because it does not have an electric lift. This means that he no longer has what freedom he had.
