HELP CASSIE KICK CANCER

[En español abajo]
If you're here, you probably already know our story (which I'll leave in more detail below)... Not long ago, Cassie has had a major surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and the ovary it was attached to. The cancer is still affecting her other ovary and uterus but we are fighting. I'm making this page because so many people have asked what they can do to help. The first thing we ask for is PRAYER which sustains us day by day. If, in addition, you want to help us financially, you can do so here. We are very grateful for any help you can offer as our medical expenses will be over $13,000 (after insurance)... THANK YOU!

¡GRACIAS!

Cassie and I were married on September 29th, 2016 and moved to Granada, Spain, where I had taken a job. We had a lot of trouble getting Cassie a visa but finally succeeded around Christmas of 2017. We were finally ready to settle into our life in Granada... But on June 21st doctors in Granada told us that Cassie had what looked like an ovarian cyst. She would have to have it removed but it wasn't likely to be problematic, as ovarian cysts are mostly benign. An MRI a couple weeks later painted a different picture and the doctors told us that Cassie needed to have her ovaries and uterus removed as soon as possible. We packed up and headed back to the US in order to get a second opinion and surround ourselves with family and friends. Cassie had a CT scan done which gave us reason to hope that it wasn't cancer, and that even if it was, she could maintain her fertility as the tumor seemed to be contained. Unfortunately, when Cassie was operated on (by an excellent team of doctors) on July 17th, the doctors found that there were actually two tumors that were stuck together and had begun to metastasize locally. After almost six hours the doctors had managed to remove the tumor and leave most of one ovary and her uterus intact. The quick biopsy that was done during surgery looked like the tumor was a "borderline" cancer, which, while being cancer, was the easiest to deal with. We had to spend the night in the hospital as Cassie recovered and by now she is basically back on her feet. Unfortunately, when the full biopsy was done, we found out that the cancer on her ovaries was not borderline but a low-grade, stage two cancer, and there was also cancer inside of her uterus.

Right now we have to decide whether Cassie will get a full hysterectomy or whether we will try an alternative route in the hopes of preserving her uterus and remaining ovary. A cancer like Cassie's a very rare for her age so rarely have the doctors tried this treatment without removing the reproductive organs but the doctors have given us the possibility of leaving her ovary and uterus where they are during treatment in the hopes that we could still have kids one day.

We are still waiting for a second opinion from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, which we will get on August 21st, and for the results of another MRI, as well as a targeted treatment analysis to come back before we make a decision. Though we would love to have a family, our prayer is that Cassie be healed as soon as possible and that God makes it clear to us what He would have us do. We ask that you would join us in that prayer.
