We are aiming to drastically improve access to safe, reliable at-home COVID-19 testing for U.S. households. The SafeAtHome SwabSafe test kit allows suspected COVID-19 patients to stay, isolated, in the safety of their home, until they are confirmed positive for coronavirus.
1) Samples will be collected by the patients themselves.
2) A courier service picks up the samples and sends it to a testing facility
3) The patients will securely receive their results from our app within 48 hours
4) Contact information for medical guidance will be provided
From these results, it can be determined whether they need to go to a hospital or not. Through this process, we are not only reducing the depletion of PPE but also minimizing avoidable risk to healthcare workers since patients suspected of COVID-19 can test at home. Consequently, the spread of COVID-19 will be limited and we would decrease the chances of healthy patients contracting the virus.
We need your help to purchase 20 beta COVID-19 at-home testing kits. Additionally, we are fundraising for app development, operation fees, and delivery fees for a courier service.
This project will help most patients who want to be tested have to go to a testing facility in order to be tested. We plan to prioritize distribution to vulnerable populations first -- including healthcare workers, the elderly, immigrants and immunocompromised patients. People such as healthcare workers at a higher risk because they have greater exposure to the virus. If a healthcare worker is infected, the virus can easily spread. In the elderly population, specifically those 70 years old and above, have a higher death rate than younger people. Recent immigrants are also at a greater risk for getting infected, as they may lack the financial resources to fight COVID -19. Many immigrants also do not have access to quality healthcare insurance which makes it harder for them to pay for tests and diagnostics. Those who are immunocompromised are also at risk from COVID-19.
We hope to raise $2,500 initially:
1) $800 for app development, with particular focus on encryption and security. Our app needs to be able to securely store confidential patient data -- such as medical record number and insurance information -- via encryption software.
2) $500 will be used to purchase at-home beta COVID-19 testing kits.
3) $400 will be allotted for Richmond Express and Courier Service delivery fees.
4) $800 will go for laboratory testing and statistical/effective analysis.
Note: If we are unable to raise our goal of $2,500, we will be donating the funds received to a CDC affiliated COVID-19 campaign, such as Doctors Without Borders.
Our campaign will run until the 28th of August. Our team of five students at Virginia Commonwealth University include: Nuhash Bhuiyan, Anubhav Thapaliya, Teerth Patel, Lyndsey Highlander, and Sivam Bhatt. All five of us have family members who are frontline workers or of older age, consequently putting them at a greater risk for COVID-19. One of us also suffers from an immunocompromised disease which exacerbates the effect that COVID-19 has. This dilemma is particularly frightening during routine appointments. One of us recently immigrated to the United States and has seen first-hand the discrepancy that immigrants experience with medical education and health insurance.
We truly appreciate your donation to our cause. With your contribution we would be able to facilitate in COVID-19 testing, which in turn would help curb the number of cases and deaths observed in the United States. Your donation would help the team in moving one step closer to our goal of keeping people safe. The funds will be managed in a bank account that will be made strictly for this endeavour. All transactions will be made under the supervision and guidance of the Clinton Global Initiative University.
This campaign is part of the 2020 Clinton Global Initiative University COVID-19 Student Crowdfunding Challenge.
