Donation protected
On October 4, 2014, Darrell Hawkins was in a severe motorcycle accident while on his annual Autumn ride with his motorcycle buddies and son Nicko. His injuries are life changing. He fractured his spine at level T 4-5, which means he has no sensation or movement below his mid chest. He also had 4 fractured ribs on his right side and 1 fractured rib on the left. His left collarbone was broken and displaced and his right ankle and tibia were fractured. The good news is he has full use of both arms, and has his diaphragm so is able to breathe on his own. He had no head injury as he was wearing good protective gear.
Needless to say the Hawkins family's lives have been changed dramatically, as Darrell is now paralyzed below his mid-chest.
Joy and Darrell are fortunate to have insurance covering much of his current hospitalization, but adjusting to a new daily life can be expensive. Buying a suitable wheelchair and other medical equipment, modifying their home, adapting his car, or purchasing a van and lifts can all add up to a financial burden. Volunteers from their church are generously providing labor, but building ramps, widening doorways, and making rooms accessible will still be costly. Darrell will also need ongoing medical and rehabilitation / therapy services for a long period of time. There are likely to be unanticipated needs and assistive technologies required, as well.
As all of you know, he is an extremely hard working person so we can only imagine how difficult this will be for him. Darrell's family is incredibly grateful for any donation made and also for the abundance of love and support.
