Gyros Planet staying! But they need our support!

Donation protected
UPDATE AS OF SUNDAY FEBRUARY 28

Thank you to the many, many people both in Evanston and elsewhere who stepped up to help Gyros Planet remain in business in their current location. On behalf of Erika and Pablo, they are so incredibly humbled and grateful for the support! As soon as they've reopened, remember to order from them and keep their business strong!

All our shops, restaurants, salons, and studios need us right now. Shop local, shop often!

UPDATE AS OF FRIDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 26

Last night I learned that Gyros Planet’s landlord, who himself has had some struggles over the past months, had reluctantly given the lease to another tenant. It saddens me to report that Gyros Planet on Church Street will unfortunately be closed as of today, February 26th.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!

Despite the jarring news, Erika called me early this morning to tell me that the couple, who are so incredibly grateful for and overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, has decided that they will re-open at another location as soon as they can and continue to doggedly pursue their dream.

They so deserve to succeed.

The GoFundMe, which was paused after I learned the new information last night, is now back up and available so we can continue to contribute and help Erika and Pablo reopen at their new location.

It’s an incredible testament to the generosity of the community that we could meet the original $30,000 goal in just 24 hours.

Dear Evanston,

We are all exhausted.

We've worked hard.

We've donated and supported and volunteered.

Evanston's amazing caterers and chefs and cooks and grocery stores and restaurants have done nothing less than a heroic job of keeping families fed during this excruciatingly difficult time.

And few more than Erika Castro and Pablo Sanchez of Gyros Planet on Church and Dodge.

Right now, after serving thousands of meals to Evanson and Chicago families who otherwise would not have been able to put food on the table--even as they were struggling to keep their own family afloat--this incredibly generous husband-and-wife team are depending on all of us to stretch our generosity of spirit and support just a little further.

With little to no foot-traffic thanks to Covid-19, and no student customers because ETHS is closed for now, Gyros Planet is in imminent danger of shutting its doors and the Castro-Sanchez family are in peril of losing their income.

The couple desperately needs to raise $30,000 by no later than THIS SATURDAY in order to pay their rent and other bills and to stay afloat until late August when, we all hope, ETHS will start back up in person, Evanston will be busting again, and other activities will be back in (almost) full swing, and their usual clientele are back and their place is b busy.

Please! Dig deep into your souls and your pockets to support Evanston residents, business owners, and the kindest souls you'll ever meet --Erika, Pablo, and their three children--by helping to save their restaurant.

1. Donate to this GoFundMe--as much as you're able to give, and then just a little more.

2. Order their amazing family meals (for ever 10 meals, they donate one meal to a family in need).

3. Check out their delicious offerings  : Guatemalan food, Mayan meals, burgers, gyros, hot dogs, fish and shrimp, chicken, tacos, salads and more!

Let's pull together now to help this family that has helped so many other families!

Please give generously and as soon as possible.

In addition to Dear Evanston 's interview with the couple in April 2020, just as the pandemic began and they were working day and night to feed families in the community, you can read and watch lots of other coverage  about their lives, their generous spirits, and their restaurant here.

On behalf of Erika and Pablo,

Thank you Evanston!
