First of all, thank you very much for taking the time to read my appeal for donations. 
 
My name is Sabrina and I am 37 years old. Only a few months ago I was given the shocking diagnosis of stage 2, type 4 lipedema. In my case this means, both my upper and lower legs as well as my arms are affected. According to several lipedema surgeons, I need 4-5 medical liposuctions to stop the disease. Each operation costs around 8,000 €, total costs are around 40,000 € or even more. 
 
On march 26th this year, the local newspaper Kreiszeitung reported about my long odyssey to diagnosis. Read article below:

My story: 

When I started puberty, I began to uncontrollably gain weight on my buttocks and legs. My doctors simply admonished me to diet and labelled me obese. Together with the constant bullying from my classmates, this led to me slipping into my first eating disorder at the age of 12. Until my late 20s, despite of exercising, I suffered from my disproportionate weight. Under the close consultations of numerous nutritionists, I had tried all the diets in the world by then. However, the successes could only be measured in grams. Next to feeling left alone by the doctors, doubts from those around me, self-doubts and depression were my constant companions. 

Everything changed at the start of my 30s. I did weight training excessively for months - up to six times a week and lost 28 kg. I was at my personal physical peak, fitter than ever before. Thanks to the loving support of my sports club, I qualified myself as a group fitness instructor and gym trainer. I have been pursuing this part-time job with dedication for six years now and still enjoy every moment of it. 

Shortly after my drastic weight loss success, however, I began to feel pain and a feeling of heaviness, as well as persistent exhaustion and coldness in my arms and legs. At first, I dismissed the pain as sore muscles and carried on. I was put back on a permanent diet and and felt left alone again. While no doctor felt responsible for examining my symptoms more closely - I was simply overweight and needed to lose weight - I only told my husband about the symptoms. 

But the pains got worse and worse. I gained all weight back in a short time, was put back on a permanent diet and felt left alone again. Finally, a visit to a vascular surgeon led to the diagnosis with lipoedema. A shock for me. According to medical opinion, the weight loss may even have triggered my hormones in such a way that, ironically, it caused a lipedema “boost”. For 25 years I was incorrectly assessed and treated. My beloved weight training is now only possible to a very limited extent and I often torture myself through my sports classes. Afterwards, everything hurts for days, often even during the exercises. The nights are cold and cruelly painful. 
 
Lipoedema - a physical and emotional burden: 

Lipoedema is a chronic and progressive fat distribution disorder that is often inherited and, according to current knowledge, is triggered by female hormones. Every 9th woman in Germany is affected, while the diagnosis gap is 20 years. Unfortunately, the disease has not been sufficiently researched and the medical community is not trained nor sensibilized to the disease. 

The uncontrolled proliferation and enlargement of fat cells in the arms, buttocks and legs is one of the main characteristics of lipedema. A distinction is made between three stages and four types. To date, the staging has mainly been based on visual criteria, although the symptoms can be very distinct and distressing even at an early stage. 

The main symptoms include: 

- Physical proportions that do not match the rest of the body (significantly enlarged legs with a slim upper body) 

- Pain and tightness in the legs and arms 

- Pressure pain and pain to the touch in the legs and arms 

- Feeling of heaviness in legs and arms 

- Exhaustion and fatigue 

- Cold extremities 

- Symmetrical appearance of fat pads on legs and/or arms 

- Tendency to bruise 

- No response to dietary measures or exercise on legs and arms 

Currently, medical liposuction is the only sustainable form of treatment. This operation is in no way comparable to a cosmetic treatment. Nevertheless, it is only approved by health insurance companies for patients in stage 3 (and only under certain controversial criteria). In contrast, only conservative treatment using compression stockings and manual lymphatic drainage throughout the year is available for patients in stages 1 and 2. Their effectiveness is only given for the moment of application and is therefore not considered to be permanently effective. 
 
Reclaiming my life: 

I don't know what will happen next. Without sports, the medical prognosis is worse and ultimately it would also have financial consequences if I had to give up my beloved part-time job as a fitness instructor at some point. Not to mention the fact that it's my hobby and I simply don't want to! The conservative treatment doesn't bring me any relief. In fact, it only restricts my life even more. 

Even though I find it difficult to share all this with you, I hope there will be people here who - without harming themselves – can spare a few euros for me so that I can afford the necessary surgeries for a long last recovery. I want to live a normal, pain-free life again and be able to pursue my sports and my work as a fitness instructor and gym trainer with full commitment. 

So I really appreciate every penny!

Nach Einschätzung mehrerer Lipödem-Chirurgen, sind bei mir 4-5 medizinische Liposuktionen (Fettabsaugungen) von Nöten um die Krankheit aufzuhalten. Jede OP ca. 8.000 €, Gesamtkosten rund 40.000 €, wenn nicht sogar mehr.

Zu meiner Geschichte 
 
Mit Beginn der Pubertät begann die unkontrollierte Gewichtszunahme an Gesäß und Beinen. Meine Ärzte ermahnten mich lediglich zur Diät, stempelten mich als adipös ab. Meine Mitschüler erinnerten mich dank ihres unermüdlichen Mobbings stets daran so gut wie nichts zu essen. Ich schlitterte also mit 12 Jahren in meine erste Essstörung. Bis in meine späten 20er hinein litt ich trotz Sport sehr unter meinem unproportionalen Gewicht und hatte inzwischen sämtliche Diäten der Welt durch. Mehrere Ernährungsberatungen bewiesen mir nur, wie gut ich bereits alles umsetze. Die Erfolge ließen sich aber nur in Gramm belegen. Zweifel meiner Mitmenschen, Selbstzweifel und Depressionen waren meine ständigen Begleiter. Von den Ärzten kam keine Hilfe. 
 
Mit Beginn meiner 30er änderte sich alles. Ich betrieb monatelang exzessiv Kraftsport – bis zu 6 Mal die Woche und nahm 28 kg ab. Ich war in meiner persönlichen, körperlichen Höchstform, fit wie noch nie. Dank liebevoller Unterstützung meines Sportvereins, ließ ich mich zur Übungsleiterin für Gruppenfitness und zur Trainerin im Fitnessstudio ausbilden. Dieser Nebenbeschäftigung gehe ich nun seit 6 Jahren voller Überzeugung nach und genieße jeden Augenblick. 
 
Kurz nach meinem drastischen Abnahmeerfolg, kamen die ersten Spannungsschmerzen und heftigen Schweregefühle in den Beinen sowie eine anhaltende Erschöpfung und Kälte in Armen und Beinen. Die Schmerzen verbuchte ich zunächst unter Muskelkater und machte weiter. Die Beschwerden summierten und verschlimmerten sich jedoch. Ich nahm in kurzer Zeit wieder alles an Gewicht zu. Ich litt leise, berichtete lediglich meinen Mann von den Beschwerden und war wieder auf Dauerdiät. Kein Arzt fühlte sich verantwortlich meine Symptome genauer zu erforschen – ich sei ja nur adipös und müsse abnehmen. 
 
Erst der Besuch einer Gefäßchirurgie brachte die Lipödem-Diagnose. Ein Schock für mich. Nach medizinischer Einschätzung hat die Gewichtsabnahme u.U. sogar meine Hormone so getriggert, dass es einen Lipödem-Schub hervorrief. Welch Ironie. Ich bin also 25 Jahre falsch beurteilt und behandelt worden. Meinem heißgeliebten Kraftsport kann ich inzwischen nur noch stark reduziert nachgehen und durch meine Sportkurse quäle ich mich oft. Danach schmerzt alles tagelang, oft auch während der Ausführungen. Die Nächte sind grausam schmerz- und kältedurchzogen. 
 
Das Lipödem - Eine körperliche und seelische Belastung 
 
Das Lipödem ist eine chronische und voranschreitende Fettverteilungsstörung, die häufig vererbt und nach aktuellem Kenntnisstand durch weibliche Hormone ausgelöst wird. Jede 9. Frau in Deutschland ist betroffen. Der Diagnose-Gap liegt bei 20 Jahren. Die Krankheit ist leider nicht ausreichend erforscht und die Ärzteschaft nicht geschult oder gar sensibilisiert auf die Erkrankung. Die ungesteuerte Vermehrung und Vergrößerung der Fettzellen in Armen, Gesäß und Beinen ist eines der Merkmale des Lipödems. Es wird zwischen drei Stadien und vier Typen unterschieden. Die Stadieneinteilung erfolgt bis dato vorwiegend nach optischen Kriterien, obgleich das Beschwerdebild auch in einem frühen Stadium sehr ausgeprägt und belastend sein kann. 

Zu den Leitsymptomen gehören: 
 
• Körperliche Proportionen, die nicht zum restlichen Körper passen (deutlich vergrößerte Säulenbeine bei schlankem Oberkörper) 

• Schmerzen und Spannungsgefühle in Beinen und Armen 

• Druckschmerz und Berührungsschmerz in Beinen und Armen 

• Schweregefühl in Beinen und Armen 

• Erschöpfung und Abgeschlagenheit 

• Kalte Extremitäten 

• Symmetrisches Auftreten der Fettpolster an den Beinen und/oder Armen 

• Neigung zu blauen Flecken 

• Keine Reaktion auf diätische Maßnahmen oder Sport an Beinen und Armen 
 
Die medizinische Liposuktion (Fettabsaugung) ist derzeit die einzige nachhaltige Behandlungsform. Diese OP ist keineswegs mit einer kosmetischen Behandlung zu vergleichen. Dennoch wird sie nur für Patienten in Stadium 3 von den Krankenkassen genehmigt (und auch nur unter gewissen umstrittenen Kriterien). Dem gegenüber steht für Patienten in Stadium 1 und 2 nur die konservative Behandlung mittels ganzjähriger Kompressionsbestrumpfung und manueller Lymphdrainage zur Verfügung. Deren Wirksamkeit ist nur für dem Moment der Anwendung gegeben und gilt daher als nicht dauerhaft zielführend. 
 
Mein Leben zurück erobern 
 
Ich weiß nicht wie es weiter gehen soll. Ohne Sport sind die medizinischen Prognosen noch schlimmer. Letztlich hätte es auch finanzielle Auswirkungen meine Nebentätigkeit irgendwann aufgeben zu müssen. Ganz abgesehen davon, dass es mein Hobby ist und ich das nicht möchte! Die konservative Behandlung bringt mir keine Erleichterung. Im Gegenteil. Es schränkt mein Leben nur noch mehr ein. 
 
Auch wenn es mir schwerfällt, all dies mit der Öffentlichkeit zu teilen, so hoffe ich es finden sich hier Menschen, die – ohne sich selbst zu schaden – ein paar Euros für mich übrig haben, damit ich mir diese OPs leisten kann. Ich möchte wieder ein normales, beschwerdefreies Leben führen, meinem Sport und meiner Aufgabe als Übungsleiterin und Trainerin glaubwürdig nachgehen können.
