Costa Rica Mission Trip

My name is Marielle Bellini, and I am a Physical Therapy student at the University of Mount Union. This December break, I have a once in a lifetime opportunity to embark on a volunteer mission trip to Costa Rica. On this trip, not only will I be able to volunteer and serve those overseas, but I will also be able to apply my education and what I have learned thus far in PT school through International Service Learning. International Service Learning is an APTA (American Physical Therapy Association) promoted and recognized, non-profit organization that leads groups of volunteers to countries all over the world to provide medical care to those are who in need.
A few of my classmates and I will be volunteering in San Jose, Costa Rica from December 15th-23rd. The time will be spent with intensive training seminars about assessments, treatments, patient intake, as well as learning some of the medical terminology in Spanish or Swahili, in order to provide care within the community. During our 9 days, we will be assisting professional caregivers by providing orthopedic massage and physical therapy, visiting homes to provide basic health screenings, helping schedule appointments to a field clinic, as well as learning to maintain/manage supplies and inventory. The field clinic will be staffed by local, licensed medical professionals. We will be rotating through stations that conduct the initial patient interviews, observe a PT in diagnosing and treating, participate in pharmacy stations, as well as engaging with the community that we will be immersed in. Not only is this an opportunity of a lifetime, but after completing my first set of clinicals and gaining hands on experience and guidance, our team wants to serve beyond our borders.
The cost of this trip will be $3000. To help make this trip possible, your donations will help cover my expenses in traveling, as well as the cost of the volunteer program. I would ask you to consider helping financially. Every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated. I realize that not everyone reading this will be called to give monetarily, but my prayer is that you will commit to pray for myself and my classmates, as we embark on this special journey.
