Volunteer Trip with Shanti Uganda

Donation protected
As I sit down to write this piece for my GoFundMe campaign my heart is racing with anticipation, excitement, and a lot of nervousness. It is quite a humbling thing to ask your friends and family to not only support you emotionally on your dreams but to also support you financially.

As many of you know in 2012 I spent 7 months in Kenya.   One day at the local clinic laying outside on the grass was a young girl who looked to be in excruciating pain. I asked the doctor what her situation was, he said that she tried to manually give herself an abortion, and that she was going to bleed out if her mother did not take her to the hospital in Kitale.  Seeing that girl in that state shook me to my core.   My whole trip to Kenya lit a fire inside me I never knew existed.    From that moment I knew I wanted to do more work with women. In particular with women going through all experiences in pregnancy and birth, so that women would be empowered to make educated choices, and not endanger themselves like that of the young girl at the clinic that day.  Now I am currently enrolled at the Pacific Rim College in their Holistic Doula Program. This program is one of a kind and is the most comprehensive Doula course in North America. At the end of December when my program ends I will be traveling back to Africa for a four month volunteer internship with Shanti Uganda. Shanti Uganda is a safe birthing center in Kasana Uganda with a mission to improve infant and maternal health, provide safe women-centered care and supports the well-being of birthing mothers and women living with HIV/AIDS. My role in being a doula at Shanti Uganda will be to utilize my training in herbal medicine, family support, Tai qi, nutrition, acupressure, yoga therapy, Thai massage, homeopathy, as well as including my knowledge and experience from my last trip to Africa and my 9 years of experience as a bodywork practitioner. Sharing and integrating as much of this knowledge as possible to women at the center is my goal. The opportunity I have to share and empower people with this experience is going to be extremely rewarding. But the gift of being able to go there to learn, grow, and gain invaluable wisdom is a gift I will be forever grateful to receive. This is going to be a life changing trip and I want to share it all with my friends, family, and community.

When I return from Uganda in the spring my goal is to use my doula work serving the Saskatoon community. Working with at-risk girls and women living on the street or in low income situations, so they can receive the gift of this work as well.

If you feel compelled to support me on this journey in any amount please know that I am humbled by your generosity and truly grateful for your support. All support will be going towards:
