Stand up to Gwen’s Cancer

Cancer sucks

Cancer sucks for everyone, but can you imagine finding out you have cancer and then turning around to find out you’ve lost your job unexpectedly?
This is a situation that my mom, Gwen Poor, has been faced with. Much to her surprise she went for her routine mammogram about a month ago, the doctor called her back and asked her for a repeat mammogram. As it was, her retired teacher insurance has turned to crap thanks to the Texas Governor. Immediately out of pocket she owed $1,500. So she had to embarrassingly make sure with the doctor that this was absolutely necessary. She had to make sure that a repeat couldn’t be done the following year because frankly she couldn’t afford it. Her doctor was adamant that this needed to be done and there wasn’t much time to waste. So she did it, she went, and again same ugly results.
To shorten the story within 3 weeks of the repeat mammogram she was making appointments for biopsies (yes plural), ultrasounds, MRIs, and a surgery.
Before surgery, we had an extremely positive outlook for Gwen. She is a fighter and wasn’t going to let this take her from her kids, her precious 1st grade students, or her normal life. However more bad news hit before she went under the knife. The cancer had spread outside of the tumor walls and was now considered invasive. Still staying strong and hopeful, Gwen went through surgery like a complete boss. If you know her, she doesn’t let much take her down. Immediately following, she was told she would need 4 weeks of daily radiation, and she would soon be a cancer survivor and in remission from this nasty nasty disease. They were able to remove the entire tumor without any complications and we believed she was in the clear!
A follow-up appointment showed otherwise. She tested positive for blah (insert medical terminology that nobody can remember after being told more bad news). Blah meant that she needed to undergo Chemotherapy; which was NEVER on the table until now.
But that’s not all, my mom is a retired teacher. She works still, but at a private school. She’s loved her job teaching 1st graders, but unfortunate news from that spectrum hit after she returned to work from healing. The school is closing, and she doesn’t have a job once the school year ends.
Needless to say, she doesn’t even want to go through the treatments as she knows there won’t be an income coming in to afford such. It breaks my heart that she feels like she should let this eat her alive because of money. That’s why I am here. With a little love from people who love and know her, we can turn this outlook around. We can help her believe that cancer doesn’t stand a chance against her and her army. A little goes a long way, please share as I don’t have a lot of people who love her on my page. And as always keep her in your daily prayer!
