Guy Matthews Medical Assistance Fund

Donation protected
Rev. Guy Matthews and his wife Deanna relocated temporarily to Ottawa in June of this year while Guy awaited a heart transplant.  They left with no idea how long they would be gone but fortunately after just 3 months Guy underwent a transplant operation on September 27, 2018.

The operation went well and Guy is feeling very good. He is staying in an apartment that is part of the hospital complex and it will be at least another three months until he has medical clearance from his team of doctors to return home.  When cleared to come home to Newfoundland, they will have to travel to Ottawa for seven to ten days of medical appointments/tests every three month during the first year, twice in the second year and annually after that. If any problems occur, they will have to make additional trips to Ottawa.

As you can imagine this is a very expensive process: relocation, travel to checkups, medical costs (not covered by insurance) or the significant out of pocket expenses which add up and are a financial strain.  This fund raiser is intended to help easy the financial strain and allow Guy and Deanna to focus on getting healthy.

The Church Council at St. James has authorized the establishment of a sub-committee “The Guy Matthews Medical Assistance Fundraising Committee” made up of Trevor Bartlett (Chair Church Council), Les Dean (Chair Board of Trustee’s), and Stephen Pike (Past Chair Church Council). All funds collected will be administered by this committee who will responsible to ensure appropriate handling and accounting of money received and ensure distribution of the funds only for the purpose collected. In this regards a separate Bank account for the fund has been setup at the Bank of Nova Scotia. All funds received will be receipted by the committee however no Income tax receipt will be issued by the church as this type of fundraising does not qualify.

We are going out to the community to give people who know Guy and have benefited from his ministry and  friendship an opportunity to return to Guy the Love and Care he has given to all of us by contributing to a medical assistance fund.
