Recuperación de Gustavo Esteva

Somos los hijos y nietas de Gustavo Esteva, activista mexicano, "intelectual desprofesionalizado" y fundador de la Universidad de la Tierra en la ciudad mexicana de Oaxaca. Es uno de los defensores más conocidos del postdesarrollo.

 

Desde 1976, se decidió por el camino de la desprofesionalización, al margen de la empresa privada, de la clase política profesional y de la militancia guerrillera. Optó por “aprender de la gente y con la gente, lo que hay que hacer”. Desde Oaxaca se ha vinculado con los pueblos indios y las luchas sociales. Gracias a esas rupturas y opciones políticas y prácticas, Gustavo Esteva es hoy uno de los intelectuales “desprofesionalizados” más lúcidos respecto a la crisis y la tormenta en las que estamos inmersos.

 

Para nosotros es simplemente “nuestro papá, papi, papiringo”, “Tatagus”, y si tú has tenido la fortuna de conocerlo o leerlo seguramente tu corazón y tu mente han sidos transformados por él. Ha sido una de las mentes más brillantes que México ha tenido y es un luchador incansable.

 

Desafortunadamente, como muchos en los últimos dos años, por las últimas tres semanas se ha encontrado batallando este virus que ha tocado tantas familias. Su caso fue suficientemente grave que hace una semana lo tuvimos que llevar a un hospital.

 

Parece que ya pasó lo peor, pero sigue en estado delicado. Ya que logramos estabilizarlo, estamos enfrentando el siguiente reto - cómo pagar sus tratamientos hasta ahora y los que siguen.

 

Por mala suerte, no tenía seguro médico ni privado ni público, estaba en proceso de tramitarlo pero nunca lo completó. El hospital que lo aceptó, fue afortunadamente bueno, pero desafortunadamente, privado.

 

Él nunca fue hombre de muchos recursos, pero siempre fue hombre de muchos amigos. Algo que las últimas semanas han reforzado mucho para nosotros.

 

Para las personas que han preguntado cómo apoyar a nuestra familia en este momento, les ofrecemos éste camino. Hay los que van a poder dar y los que no, pero a todos les apreciamos el abrazo cálido y fuerte que hemos sentido estas semanas mientras navegamos esta situación complicada.

 

No sabemos cuánto va a terminar costando, pero por el momento estamos buscando recaudar $300,000 (Trescientos mil pesos mexicanos) equivalente a $15,000 dólares americanos para cubrir la cuenta del hospital pendiente.

We’re the children and grandchildren of Gustavo Esteva, Mexican activist, “de-professionalized intellectual”, and founder of Universidad de la Tierra in the city of Oaxaca, and one of the best known defenders of post-development.

 

Since 1976, he’s been on the path of deprofessionalization, after having spent many years in both private industry and becoming fairly senior in the Mexican government. He opted instead to “learn from the people and with the people, how to move forward”. Since then he has spent his time connected to indigenous peoples and social movements, both in his home state of Oaxaca and across the world. This has turned him into one of the best know deprofessionalized intellectuals and important voices on the many crises we face as a society today.

 

He is one of Mexico’s most brilliant minds and a tireless fighter. To us, he is simply “papá, papi, papiringo, tatagus” and if you’ve had the good fortune of knowing him or reading him, you’ve surely had your heart and mind changed in some way by his words.

 

Unfortunately, like many in the last two years, for the last three weeks he has found himself confronting this virus that has touched so many families. His case is serious enough that last week we had to take him to a hospital.

 

It seems like he’s past the worst, though he’s still in a delicate state. We managed to stabilize him and now we’re facing the next challenge - how to pay for his treatments so far and the ones he’ll surely need.

By poor luck, he didn’t have private or public insurance. His insurance ended last year when he finally “retired” at the age of 85. He was in the process of signing up for social security with the Mexican government but never completed the process. The hospital that had space when he needed it was fortunately very good, but unfortunately, private.

 

He was never a man of much material wealth, but he’s always been a man of many friendships. Something that the last few weeks have truly reinforced.

 

For the people who have asked us how they can help our family at this moment, we wanted to offer this path. There are those that will be able to give and those that won’t, but to everyone we’re grateful for the warm embrace we have felt these last few weeks as we navigate this complicated situation. We don’t know how much it will end up costing, that’s why right now we’re looking to collect $300,000 pesos (equivalent to ~$15,000 USD) to help cover the remaining hospital bill.
