Gus was at daycare on Thursday April 25th, 2019 when he started showing signs of breathing difficulty and then stopped breathing.  Gus was taken by ambulance to Children’s Hospital in St. Paul where he received emergency care. Initially an ECHO showed decreased heart function so he was transferred to the pediatric ICU in Minneapolis. A CT scan then showed two fluid collections on the brain, which an MRI showed to be collections of blood. The MRI at that time showed Gus’s brain to be without damage. Gus had emergency surgery on Friday afternoon to place a drain to evacuate the blood.

The surgery went well and the shunt is doing what it was meant to. His ECHO showed his heart function had returned to normal. However, after a repeat MRI with contrast, the doctors have given the very painful and difficult news that Gus has extensive brain damage.

We are grateful to be in a place where Gus is getting the best care possible. He is currently intubated and sedated, so very comfortable and, we hope, happy. He is on a number of medications to control seizures and infection, as well as sleepy and pain-free. We are grateful for your love and support.
