https://www.theokraproject.com The Okra Project is a grassroots group of Black Trans people(with the exception of our financial advisor) that facilitate food accesibililty to the Black TGNC community worldwide. This is done by hiring Black TGNC chefs to make home cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals to Black Trans People in New York City and Philadelphia for now. Aside from this catering service, they provide a grocery stipend to anyone self identifying as Black TGNC anywhere in the world as long as they have access to money apps throught The Okra Project Grocery Fund. The Okra Project got its name thanks to the. Historical context of the Middle Passage, where our African ancestors snuck okra onto captive ships to sustain themselves and plant in the new world. Black Diasporic cooking traditions often use the okra plant for its versatility and it is often associated with health, prosperity, and community. In this spirit, The Okra Project hopes to extend free, delicious, and nutritious meals to Black Trans people experiencing food insecurity.
The GumBall Machine and Reparations Roundtable groups have put together a fundraiser to raise a goal of $15,000. If we achieve our goal, we would be able to sustain our programs, chefs, and continue expanding services beyond just food to our Black TGNC community. The Okra Project has began to offer monthly healing events for the community and the ultimate goal is to provide resources for other local chapters nationwide to start making the experience of an at home cooked meal in communtiy accesible to the masses.
