Gulshan-E-Baghdad Proposed Muslim Burial Site

Tax deductible
The cemetery site is located in Kempston Rural, Bedford.

Cemeteries are changing in the service provision in the UK. Woodland and natural burial sites are increasing at greater rates. Further, with the increasing population of first, second and future generation Muslims requiring burial; the demand is significant for burial space for this community in the vicinity of Kempston Rural, Kempston and Bedford.

Norse Road Cemetery is the nearest cemetery to the proposal which formally offers Muslim burials. The cemetery is located on the north eastern fringe of Bedford Town, approximately 9.8 miles from the proposed site and on the opposite side of town to the proposal which is to the south west of Bedford. Though there is existing provision within Norse Road Cemetery, the community would like to prepare for future burials in a dedicated Muslim burial site.

The site which will be operated by a not-for-profit charitable organisation, would provide approximately 600 burial plots per acre. Muslim graves will continue to follow the religiously mandated style with mounded earth and a small, numbered plaque. These will be in a demarcated area which will be screened by planting to minimise the visual impact.

What will it look like?

There are approximately 50 burial plots within the current Muslim section at Norse Road Cemetery which has the capacity for 2 years of burials. Around 100 additional Muslim burial plots are planned for the Norse Road extension, allowing for an additional 4 years of Muslim burials. Though there is some space currently at Norse Road Cemetery, the local Muslim community (Gulshan-E-Baghdad) wish to have their own self-funded dedicated Muslim Cemetery to serve those across the Kempston and Bedford area.

Donation Required

For the purchase of the land and planning permission, the total cost will be approximately £350,000.

In Islam, the human body is sanctified both in life and in death (Qur’an 17.70)
Further, the human body is a trust from Allah.
A living person is Allah’s stewards and upon his/her death, the heirs are obliged to respect the integrity of the deceased’s body and bury it in its entirety after death.
