Field Trip to Construction Kids

Living in New York City allows students many wonderfully diverse opportunities and experiences. One experience that many kids don’t have is a chance to learn how to build and use their hands. In a city, space is tight. Our apartments are small and we use every inch of our school. Very few children have garages or spaces where they can experience using tools to build and create.
The Science Team at The Growing Up Green Charter School in Long Island City want to give all 1st graders that chance.
We are raising money to send our young scientists in 1st grade on a field trip to Construction Kids. This field trip will provide the students with an opportunity, materials and space to use real tools to build real things! We find that it is important for children to not only learn in an authentic and meaningful environment, but also be able to learn the importance of using tools and materials safely. The Science Team believes in Construction Kids’ mission to grow young children with active and creative minds by using their imagination and problem-solving skills.
Specifically, the young scientists will be engaging in the “Balancing Rocket Ship (or Space Shuttle)” program in late October. The students will learn about design and balance by building their own rocket ship to keep and continue their learning at home. In addition, this program will be a great way to jump start our unit on Space and incorporate other important topics, such as simple machines.
This program cost is approximately $20 per child. There are 90 young scientists in 1st grade, so our goal is to fundraise $1800. Reaching this goal would not only give each child a chance to be a part of this educational and engaging experience, but it will also foster the children’s love for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math)!
The Science Team and the young scientists at GUGCS would be very appreciative and grateful for any donation. Your contribution will help to grow and nurture tomorrow’s engineers, inventors, and so much more!
