Each year the seniors at Notre Dame de Sion have the pleasure to complete a senior service project. Kristine, Anna, and I have come together to raise money for an orphanage in Guatemala. We decided to this because of our previous trips taken to Guatemala. The need in the community is great and we know we cant help everyone but this is a start. Guatemala has a special spot in each of our hearts. We have been truly touched by the lives of these people and want to do more for them! Each one of us has been touched by service work and we would like to share our stories with you.

Maggie's Mission:
From some of the poorest areas of Kansas City to the mountains of Guatemala, service has had a lasting impact on me as a person. It started in the eighth grade when I wanted to earn the presidential service award. To be eligible for this I needed to log 100 or more hours of volunteer service with established organizations in my community. I would go every Wednesday and every other Sunday to work with the people of Project Uplift, an outreach program to feed and clothe the homeless. The other Sundays I served lunch at a food kitchen. While I earned the presidential service award, working in these two places was where I discovered my passion for service. It's difficult to explain the joy I get from doing service. It's not necessarily doing things for others, but being in community with them that really brings me joy. Over the past two years, I have gone on two trips to Guatemala, and I have another trip planned for this coming spring break. The trips to Guatemala have been life-changing events for me. On my first trip, I was purely focused on the service. I thought the whole purpose was to help others. This is true, though there's also more to service then just doing things for other people. When you partake in service you are given the opportunity to develop relationships. I realized this two days into my first trip. I have been forever touched by the people I met and the relationships I made. Through these relationships, I have grown tremendously in my faith and my daily life. It has shown me to never take anything for granted. God tells us to give thanks and to be joyful in everything we do. No matter where I go in life, I will always carry the memories I made while doing service in Guatemala.

Anna's Mission
I have not had the chance to serve in Guatemala before, but I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to do so this upcoming Spring Break. I am excited to be able to give a hand to those in need, and to have the chance to grow from this eye-opening experience. Service is a major part of my life, and I hope that you all can help me to make a difference. People out there need our help, and we are called to be God's hands and feet to serve the less fortunate and to improve their living conditions as much as possible. This year, Maggie Nelson, Kristine Sullivan and I are doing a service project to raise money for the Guatemalan orphanage/school, Los Gozosos, and we need your help. Every dollar counts, so please donate! This means so much to us, and to the people who are benefitting from your generosity. Thank you and God bless!

Kristine's Mission
I was fortunate enough to travel to Guatemala my junior year Spring Break and I will be going again this year. When I was going to Guatemala last year, I did not know what to expect. I knew I was traveling to a third world country and I knew I would be helping people and possibly changing these people's lives. But, I did not expect to see the poverty that I saw and I did not expect the people of Guatemala to effect my life in the way they did. Maureen, the owner and founder of Los Gozozos an orphanage for abandoned and special needs children, was one of the dozens of people who impacted my life. When Maureen shared her story with me about how she was called to give up everything she had to do what God wanted her to do, I was moved to tears. I was in tears because I was moved by Maureen's faith in Christ and her ability to give her life for the children in the orphanage. The children that I met at Los Gozozos endured terrible, painful pasts, but because of Maureen's orphanage, they are able to live happy lives. These are some of the happiest people I have met, and yet they have so much to be unhappy about. I am forever grateful for Maureen and the impact she has had on my life and I want to do whatever I can to make her life and the children's lives better.

So now we ask for your help......  We are working our senior service project. We are raising money to help an orphanage in Guatemala. Los Gozosos is the organization that helps children with disabilities. They have many needs that they are not able to get because of the poor economy in Guatemala. Our goal is to give these children the basic needs to live a better/healthier life.  Above we have linked the main website for this organization if you would like to read more about it .
