Keep Walden in the Woods
Thoreau once said, "All good things are wild and free.” While we certainly appreciate the wisdom of this notion, we are beginning to feel the constraints of financial challenges across the district. The Walden Project's 15th year is well under way, and looks to be full of potential for its community of students. However, budget pressures put the Walden Project in jeopardy of losing up to two days a week of bussing to their 250 acre classroom in Monkton, VT. Field trips to New York City and to Walden Pond could also be cancelled. Please help Walden students keep breathing the fresh Vermont Mountain air in their outdoor classroom!
Who we are:
The Walden Project is a public school program serving students in grades 10-12. Operating out of Vergennes Union High School and partnering with The Willowell Foundation, The Walden Project provides students a unique interdisciplinary curriculum that emphasizes writing, philosophy, environmental studies, while supporting student centered-inquiry. The program is modeled on Henry David Thoreau’s sojourn to Walden Pond where he immersed himself in his ecology to deepen his sense of self, society, and the natural world. To that end, students are encouraged to follow and pursue their own areas of interest with support and guidance from the staff. Walden’s successful and innovative approach has been documented in local, regional, national, and international journals.
