Help & miracles for Dan Holper

Donation protected
Our dear friend, brother, uncle, husband, Dan Holper, suddenly lost the use of his legs in a rare spinal cord injury. It was Monday, July 30, 2018.

Up to the day of the 911 call, Dan was an engaged Dad of four, an active mountain biker, a generous host of countless gourmet meals at his home — and the sole proprietor of his business. His wife, Sally, rushed from their home in San Francisco to Las Vegas for his spinal surgery.

The top neurologists consulted and confirmed the damage, and that he is now a paraplegic (below his chest). First and foremost, please pray for a miracle!

But, with their incredible medical bills this past week and with months in rehab ahead as Dan learns to live and navigate without the use of his legs (and to get his house ready for his new situation in a wheelchair), there are so many unknowns yet to be navigated. Dan can no longer continue his business, as it involves all travel, which is now not possible.

Whether or not you’ve had the pleasure of knowing Dan, Sally and their family — anything you feel you can do to help offset the costs, expenses, medical bills, rehab ahead, and the loss of income to continue his business will be greatly appreciated.

Dan and Sally have taken on this new change of life plans with courage and bravery. Let’s put the power of prayer for a miracle — and the power of friends to help lift some of the financial burden and future costs for this very special family. Thank you so much! If you can’t donate, please add your prayers. We will not let go of a miracle! This is just the start!

Below is Sally’s letter sent to a few friends. This says so much about who they are and how they look to their future together:

"On Monday, Dan experienced a spontaneous epidural hematoma (very rare occurance) which resulted in paralysis from the chest down. The hematoma was removed, but the paralysis has remained and the prognosis by the doctors is not good, but that it will be a wait and watch. In the meantime, we will proceed with treatment in his current condition. Grace and peace have been bestowed upon me this afternoon with the standard and level of care that Dan is currently receiving here in Las Vegas at Sunrise Hospital. In addition to my consultations over the last two days with my cousin, Dr. Steve Reintjes, neurosurgeion in Kansas City; today, I spoke with Dr. Tom Bersot, Chief of Internal Medicine at UCSF who on our behalf consulted with the Chief Neurologist at SF General Trauma Center about Dan's case and we are on the right track for the schedule of care that has been executed and suggested here at Sunrise Hospital by the Neurology Team. Dan is under their care in the Neuro ICU with a great team of competent and loving folks. According to the Chief Neurologist at SF General, there are no additional procedures that can be done to improve the paralysis at this point. The next step once Dan is released from the care of the hospital team will be to find a really good rehab center that specializes in spinal cord injuries. We are in the process of evaluating those options!

Dan and I are in a very peaceful place right now as we embark on this adventure in our marriage and in our lives with our children and dear friends and acquaintances. We will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and our perspective has changed from planning ahead, making appointments to truly living each day in the present. In my short time here, I have connected with a wonderful Catholic community at St Anne's parish and the Cathedral of the Guardian Angels. I stopped in at the offices of the Diocese of Las Vegas and and spoke with a deacon who prayed with me and gave me a bottle of Lourdes water which I took to the hospital and sprinkled over Dan's legs while we prayed the Lourdes prayers. We have numerous visits from the local Catholic community and have offered any help we need while in Las Vegas."

Please consider donating to help Dan in his rehab and recovery! We expect miracles, and we are grateful for the miracle of their friends.
