In September 2013, Claudia's beloved granddaughter, Violet, was born 3 months before her due date and spent almost 4 months in the NICU. During this time, Claudia promised herself that if Violet turned out okay, she would support another child in need.
If you knew Claudia, you probably know all about Violet and the smart, adorable, healthy, and boisterous child she has become. True to her word, once Violet was sent home from the hospital, Claudia began to gather clothing, shoes, school supplies, sports equipment, toys, and toiletries to give to a little boy named Lucas.
Lucas lives in Recife, Brazil, Claudia’s hometown. Lucas' mother has special needs, and they depend largely on Lucas' grandmother's low income as a housekeeper to cover their daily living expenses. Whenever Claudia would go to Brazil she would take a small carry-on suitcase of her own clothing and a large checked bag, filled to the brim with things for Lucas.
Lucas is a sweet, smart, and generous boy. When Claudia brought down her first suitcase of things for him, he said that it was more than he needed and asked if he could offer a shirt to his best friend, who had no new clothes. Lucas would often send Claudia updates on what was going on in his life, and sent her get well messages all throughout her illness.
Claudia would want to know that Lucas is still being taken care of, even after her passing. In lieu of flowers, please help us to honor Claudia’s life by donating to our fund for Lucas.
