Summary: 

I'm raising funds to help cover my cat Gru’s $14,600 hospital bill after he spent 8 days in ICU (plus 2 days at a different emergency vet). 
 
Full Story: 

This fundraiser is for Gru, our 4-year-old special needs cat. Despite a disability that affects his back legs (causing them to bend in the opposite direction) and no control of his bladder, Gru lives with energy, curiosity, and so much joy. He doesn't seem to realize he's any different from our other cats (we have four total, and he's the only one with a disability). 
 
Two weeks ago, Gru suddenly vomited and became lethargic. He lost weight rapidly and could barely move. We took him to a nearby emergency vet, where they told us he was very dehydrated. They started fluids, but Gru didn’t improve. They then decided to do an ultrasound, where they found what appeared to be a "linear foreign body" in his intestines and he needed surgery asap. 
 
This first animal hospital referred us to a larger, specialized hospital with board-certified surgeons. They were honest with us: they didn’t feel equipped to safely perform the surgery given Gru’s fragile state. 
 
Gru thankfully survived the surgery in the new hospital, but we got a plot-twist-esque type of news after it was done: The surgeon found no foreign body, but they did find a strange, long green mass inside his intestines—something the surgeon had never seen before. The initial theory was cancer, but we had to wait for the biopsy results. 
 
Thankfully again, the biopsy came back negative for cance, BUT, Gru was diagnosed with a severe and rare case of enteritis (inflammation of the intestines) with complications like ulcers, necrosis, and pus. 
 
After 8 days in ICU, countless medications, being tube-fed and a plasma transfusion, Gru finally came home. He's not out of the woods yet; we're still doing tests to see if we can narrow down what exactly is going on with him, if we can find out the specific bacteria that almost killed him. 
 
He is now home in a strict medication routine, but at least alive and fighting. There's still a chance this infection could shorten his life, but we’re doing everything we can to give him the best quality of life possible. 
 
Unfortunately, Gru is ineligible for pet insurance because of his pre-existing disability, and the hospital bill came to $14,600. This is a huge amount so sudden, so I am asking for help to cover some of the cost. 
 
Gru is the happiest and most loving cat we have. He may be disabled, but he doesn’t let that slow him down! He runs, climbs, plays, and cuddles just like any other cat (though sometimes it takes him a little longer or he stumbles a bit).

Fiz essa vaquinna para ajudar a cobrir a conta do hospital do nosso gato Gru, no valor de $14.600, após ele passar 8 dias internado na UTI veterinária (além de 2 dias em outro hospital). 
 
História Completa: 

Essa vaquinha é para o Gru, nosso gato de 4 anos com necessidades especiais. Ele nasceu com uma condição que faz com que suas patas traseiras se curvem ao contrário (dificultando como ele anda) e não tem controle de sua bexiga. Acreditamos também que ele possa ter alguma condição neurológica. Mesmo assim, Gru vive com energia alegria e nem parece perceber que é diferente dos outros (temos quatro gatos, e só ele é deficiente). 
 
Duas semanas atrás, Gru vomitou de repente e ficou muito abatido. Ele perdeu peso rapidamente e mal conseguia se mover. Levamos ele às pressas para uma clínica veterinária próxima, onde nos disseram que ele estava bem desidratado. Ele começou a receber fluidos, mas não melhorava. Um ultrassom revelou o que parecia ser um “corpo estranho linear” no intestino dele e ele precisaria de cirurgia de emergência. 
 
A própria clínica nos encaminhou para um hospital veterinário maior, com cirurgiões certificados, dizendo que não tinham os recursos necessários para realizar a cirurgia com segurança, dadas as condições fracas do Gru. 
 
Felizmente, Gru sobreviveu à cirurgia, mas aí veio o plot twist: Mas o que o cirurgião não encontrou nenhum corpo estranho, e sim uma massa verde e alongada no intestino, algo que o médico nunca havia visto antes. A suspeita inicial era câncer, e tivemos que esperar pelos resultados da biópsia. 
 
Felizmente mais uma vez, a biópsia deu negativa para câncer. O diagnóstico foi uma enterite grave (inflamação intestinal) com complicações como úlceras, necrose e presença de pus. 
 
Depois de 8 dias na UTI, com muitas medicações, sendo alimentado por tubo e até transfusão de plasma, Gru finalmente voltou para casa. Ainda estamos fazendo exames para entender exatamente o que está acontecendo no intestino dele, e ele precisa tomar uma série de remédios diariamente. Ainda não estamos fora de perigo — há uma chance de essa infecção não ter cura ou de reduzir bastante a expectativa de vida dele. Mas estamos fazendo tudo que podemos para garantir qualidade de vida ao nosso Gru. 
 
Infelizmente, o Gru não pode ter plano de saúde pet por já ter uma "condição preexistente" (a deficiência). A conta do hospital ficou em US$ 14.600 (aproximadamente R$ 73 mil), um valor muito alto para nós. Por isso, estamos pedindo ajuda para conseguir pagar essa dívida e seguir cuidando bem do Gru daqui pra frente. 
 
O Gru é o gato mais feliz, amoroso e determinado que conhecemos. Mesmo com a deficiência, ele nunca deixa de tentar fazer o que os outros gatos fazem: corre, brinca, caça (e cai de vez em quando também!). Ele é muito carinhoso, algo que sentimos muita falta enquanto ele estava internado.
