GRIST FROM THE MILL- 1943

Donation protected
1943 is the second installment in the GRIST FROM THE MILL series, a trilogy of storytelling pieces inspired by dark folklore and murder ballads,  in which the steel mills of Southwestern Pennsylvania play a pivotal role.

The first installment, 1902, premiered in January of 2020, performed by creator Lissa Brennan through Dog & Pony Show Theatricals at Carnegie Stage. Met with critical acclaim and audience appreciation, it is currently being revised as a short film for inclusion in Pittsburgh Playwrights' upcoming season.

This newest work continues to build upon the tradition established by the original piece, spinning an intriguing tale to draw in listeners with rich and rhythmic language and a theatrically staged performance. Set during the Second World War, the industrial environment of the mill is revisited, this time supplemented with romance, racecars, horses, airplanes, women workers, revenge and witchcraft.

Funds raised through this initiative will underwrite the creation of this work from playscript to production, tentatively to be performed in spring of 2021. In addition to presentation as a live theatrical event, versions of this work as a filmed piece and audio work are in the planning stages.

Your support is necessary to make this independent project,  artist-driven and produced, come to life.  All the gratitude in the world for making the performing arts possible.
