A Diagnosis

On Thursday Aug. 9th our life changed in an instant. After months of discomfort and pain that doctors couldn't pinpoint, and a recent bout of stomach pain and nausea, Greg took a trip to urgent care. After the physician ran a blood test and saw that his calcium levels were alarmingly high, he ultimately ended up in the Emergency Room at St. Joe's.
After 7 hours the doctor entered the room and closed the door behind her. My heart started racing, I knew it had to be bad.
As we sat in the Hospital and listened to the doctor say the word “Cancer,” early the next morning, shock superseded reality. It felt like our world came undone, and began unraveling right before our eyes. My soulmate, my all-star beer brewer, my rock, my best friend, my rugby player, my everything, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.
Before we could even process the diagnosis we had to decide on a treatment plan. The cancer was aggressive and needed an aggressive treatment as soon as possible . The very next day, Greg started his first round of chemo.
We are at the beginning of an unexpected journey. It is very rare for someone of Greg’s age to have this form of cancer-- less than one percent of all people with this diagnosis are under 35. This means that there is not enough research for us to know what outcomes to expect, but that's pretty fitting, because he is a rare gem.
Being at Greg's side over the last week and a half has been the hardest thing I've ever done, but it has also assured me that he is the best person I know. During this challenging time, Greg is still being his positive, witty, selfless self, and it is showing in great ways. He is responding to Chemo well, and still trying to muster up the energy to spend time with his family and friends.
