Greg's Diabetic Alert Dog

Donation protected
My name is Gregory Cornell. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was 11 months old, and now have been diagnosed with Leukemia and am currently undergoing chemotherapy. The chemo drugs are causing my blood sugars to be very difficult to manage, which forces my parents to check it every two hours while I'm asleep. If my blood sugar becomes too low or too high, it is potentially lethal and otherwise may have long term health effects during the course of my life. As a result I am seeking funding to purchase a diabetic alert/service dog, which will be able to alert me and family members when my blood sugar is irregular, allowing for more rapid responses to my condition from both myself and my family members, especially if I am ever alone, as both low and high blood sugar could result in a loss of consciousness and eventually death if they go unnoticed. I can't count on being in the constant company of someone who understands and is capable of assisting me with this problem, and a diabetic alert dog is the perfect solution. These dogs are trained to detect hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) very early, before any symptoms are noticeable allowing me to treat myself accordingly to maintain normal levels. This would also help me in that it would allow me to function without needing to constantly wake my parents, who both work full time. In order to continue my education as a nursing student, I will need to regain the autonomy I once had and return to living without the constant fear of hyper and hypoglycemia going undetected while I focus on getting my nursing degree. The alert dog will be able to go with me anywhere, this includes going with me to all public places, including class and work, so that I can be montored while I focus on tasks in my life that are important for my future.  Unfortunately, the training of diabetic alert dogs is both difficult and time consuming, requiring as long as six months before being placed with a diabetic, as they must be trained with the specific scent of the person they are paired with. As a result they are rather costly, which is why I'm creating this page; in the hopes that the charity of others will allow me to continue working toward my goals without letting Leukemia complicate my life any more than it does that of a non-diabetic. I know that nothing will return to normal until I am cancer free, but attaining the help of a diabetic alert dog will be the closest I get to normalcy until that day, although it will also continue to benefit me for a long time afterward. I would greatly appreciate any amount donated toward this cause, and also a share on social media which could help the page reach people who may not otherwise find it. Thanks for your time.
