On June 3rd 2017, at 7:27 AM, Greg Thompson was riding his bicycle on State Road 2 just east of Laporte, Indiana. During this ride, Greg was struck by an unknown “green truck” (vehicle fled the scene after hitting Greg.) After being struck, Greg was thrown from the roadway into the ditch. Thankfully, emergency responders were able to get to the scene quickly and immediately began treating Greg. Shortly after an emergency response, Greg was airlifted to Memorial Hospital to treat a multitude of substantial injuries. Some of these injuries include the following: multiple breaks/fractures to Greg’s pelvis, some broken ribs, fractured vertebrae and a lower leg fracture.
While Greg’s family is very optimistic he can recover from these injuries there is no denying the road to recovery will be long and challenging. However, if anyone can bounce back from this it is Greg. As many of you in the New Carlisle community know, Greg is a very passionate athlete. Prior to this tragedy, Greg was in the process of training for his 5th Ironman Triathlon (already previously completed 4 of these races in Lake Placid, New York.) Anyone who knows Greg knows his passion is to run, bike and swim. When he is not doing these grueling activities, chances are he is trying to get someone else to do these activities.
As far as this Go Fund Me Page, it is very well known that the New Carlisle Community has a long history of coming together anytime tragedy strikes one of its members. This page is all about giving the community an opportunity to support Greg and his family. As it was mentioned before, Greg’s road to recovery is going to be long and difficult. Greg has several more surgeries in his future as well as countless hours of physical therapy. With a recovery process like this, it is no secret that medical expenses can add up quickly. Any type of support you can provide will go a long way to making this journey just a little bit smoother for Greg and his family.
