GreenwichSchool Restoration Project

My name is Hyacinth Randall and I am a past student of Greenwich Public School, Kingston, Jamaica and a beneficiary of the education and nurturing I received from that school.  Greenwich is in dire need of help to renovate, refurbish and replenish the Canteen, Cafeteria and Home Economics Department.  I, together with the help of other past students, am spearheading a drive to meet those needs.  Therefore we are appealing to past students, friends of past students and anyone willing to help  provide support to help with the renovation, refurbishing and replenishing.   Greenwich is located in a “depressed area” hence the need is greater.
Over the past 5 years, with the help and support of my employer, Seneca College, I have been providing the school with computers, desks, chairs, and assistance to students entering high school.  However, I’d like to extend the focus to renovating, refurbishing and replenishing the Canteen, Cafeteria and Home Economics Department.   In order to achieve this goal, we are appealing  for contributions, “every little bit counts”, no amount is too small and none too great.

CAFETERIA: The students need a proper cafeteria in which to eat lunch and socialize with each other.  There is adequate space, but tables and benches are required.

CANTEEN: This is in desperate need of a complete overhauling, including a working stove, fridge and freezer.

HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT:  The room is available but it needs to be furnished. It is in need of stoves, fridge and all the requisite baking and cooking utensils.

With your help, our goal is to:

(a) Refurbish and furnish the cafeteria, it needs tables and benches

(b) Completely overhaul the Canteen and replace the stove, fridge and freezer.  We need to add proper cupboards for storage.

(c)     Furnish the Home Economics Department with all the necessary items to establish a full functioning department.  Some of these items include, work tables, fridges and stoves together with the requisite smaller items used for home economics studies.

Our time line for completing this project is ONE YEAR.  We will start with the canteen, then the cafeteria and then the Home Economics Department. We are confident this can be accomplished, if we start now.

On my annual trips to visit the school, I meet and spend  an enormous amount of time with  teachers and students. The students continually express their desire for opportunities to increase their knowledge, and teachers ask for additional resources.  Funds are quite limited and as  result some areas, such as the ones mentioned above, are put on a "to do list".

I have also observed the interaction between parents and teachers, and realized that they too (parents) want and need help for their children. They want to see their children succeed, but do not have the resources.  Here is an opportunity to pay it forward.

Our present goal is $75,000.  We need your help to make this a reality.  “More hands make work light”.  Let us strive to make this school “an oasis in this extremely arid desert”. We can do it, I know we can!!!

On my last visit in July I promised the students that I would do my best to make this a reality.  Help me keep that promise.
