Citizens to Preserve Overton Park fought for three years to create the protected 126-acre Old Forest State Natural Area for all citizens to enjoy forever. We won that fight on June 8, 2011, thanks to strong support from our community.
In the spring of 2014, we launched the Get Off Our Lawn campaign to defend another threatened public space in Overton Park: the 12-acre Greensward.
The historic Greensward is a free public space that welcomes everyone, and we believe it represents the future of our city. Will we protect and cherish the places that bring citizens together, or will we continue to fence off and monetize our publicly owned resources?
Our community has supported this campaign by showing up to City Council meetings, displaying yard signs and banners, and peacefully protesting the destruction of our parkland.
Because CPOP is a Tennessee nonprofit but not yet a Federal 501(c)3, our friends at Memphis Heritage have graciously offered their help as fiscal agent for a Save the Greensward Fund. Your donation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Donations to this fund will be used exclusively to promote our Save the Greensward message, via two methods: large banners displayed prominently at local businesses and homes, and advertising posters on the backs of Memphis Area Transit Authority buses.
Our target amount of $11,535 will pay for:
• Five 6x8-foot ads on MATA bus backs for three months starting in June ($594 per bus per month)
• Five 5x20-foot banners ($275 per banner)
• Ten 3x12-foot banners ($125 per banner)
Donations in excess of our target will go toward "Save the Greensward" paper fans for friendly volunteers to give away to zoo visitors and others.
