Overwhelming poverty. Climate change. These are the harsh realities that face us today. Trees are our biggest allies in changing the course of climate change. And yet for millions of the world’s poorest, cutting down trees is the means to their next meal. But it doesn’t have to be this way. GreenStand is an innovative nonprofit dedicated to creating a greener, richer path. Step 1: Transform tree-planting efforts into tree-growing campaigns Every year, well-meaning volunteers and organizations around the world plant tens of millions of seedlings. Today, most face two choices: start expensive monitoring programs, or keep costs low by doing no follow-up resulting in high mortality rates. But dead seedlings don’t help the Earth – mature trees do! Volunteers at GreenStand are developing an open-source app called TreeTracker that lets individuals and organizations track the growth of trees over time by simply taking a picture of the tree, transforming tree-planting efforts into tree-growing campaigns. Step 2: Pay people living in extreme poverty to grow trees In many of the poorest parts of the world, trees are still the number one natural resource for cooking food. This adds to vast deforestation and degradation of the land. But living trees are valuable too, a value that’s worth paying for. With TreeTracker, individual and corporate donors will be able to see and pay for trees grown by individuals or communities. Step 3: Use big data to increase our knowledge -- and our outcomes When thousands of people share information about millions of trees, scientists can use this data to better understand the realities of climate change and establish best practices in reforestation. GreenStand and other organizations can then pass on this information to local planting efforts. Help us help the Earth TreeTracker is not just a dream! We have already tested it on 43,044 seedlings in Tanzania . But we need to make the app powerful enough to handle billions of trees, yet accessible enough that people all over the world can use it. We need funding to make that happen. Your donations can make TreeTracker what it needs to be. Help empower people to grow trees to make the world greener, the climate more stable, and the air and water cleaner. Support GreenStand today and plant a seed for our planet’s future!
