Greenlight Education Center

Greenlight Education Center is located in Western Kenya, in a rural valley 45-minutes inland from Lake Victoria.

Mary Omollo began the school for young children who were orphaned from AIDS and soon it expanded to include every child in this valley.  Now the school serves over 200 students from nursery to Grade 7 and is registered with the state education board. 

Our first Service and Safari trip to Kenya was in September 2018. We provided funds for one large building with two classrooms, solar power, water tanks, toilets, desks, a fenced yard, a student meal program and teacher's salaries.

Because of travel restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic, we postponed our September 2020 trip and we look forward to when we can reschedule this amazing journey.

Kenya has a lockdown order and curfews for April and May. The Minister of Education has set a June 1 date for schools to open and run through November 30, 2020. Students will be required to wear a mask to school when it opens in June. 

There is a danger of widespread hunger and starvation in this region due to the consequences of Covid-19 stay-at-home orders, as people cannot work. Agriculture is also suffering due to a locust infestation and flooding. 

On April 30th Amazing Grace sent $850 to provide masks for the students, teachers and staff, and one adult in the family, plus a bar of soap and maize, which is a food staple, for each family. 

We are raising funds to continue sponsoring the teacher’s salaries and meals for the children, which is $1,160 a month, beginning this June.

Longer term future goals are to replace all of the tin temporary buildings to have four permanent buildings with two classrooms.
