We were contacted by a Specialist School, Greenfields Academy, for SEMH pupils (Social, Emotional, Mental Health) aged 5 to 16 years in Grantham, (formerly The Phoenix Academy) who have an almost complete Caterham Sigma Car they were building under the Sevens for Schools Scheme as an experience for the pupils and to raise funds for the school towards building some much needed outbuildings.
The project was started in 2013 by a teacher at the school who left a few years ago and the car was put in storage where it sat for some time. Sadly they had a break in a few months ago and the wheels & tyres, catalytic converter and silencer were stolen along with a few other small parts. Some of these parts are costly to replace. The school now has no expertise with the car and has had some silly offers which it has been sensible enough to decline.
This story has been floating around in other Facebook Caterham groups and nobody did anything, so Alastair and I thought it is time to harness the power of the largest Caterham community on FB (the Owners Group, Marketplace and Techtalk groups) and raise enough to buy the necessary parts and pay for an IVA to be done. We will set up a group which will have photos of the progress as we go forwards.
We act with the full and exclusive permission of Greenfields Academy.
We have to raise around £2600 to cover the cost of parts and shipping, logistics and getting the car through the IVA so it may be sold and the school realise the value back into its fundraising.
Chris Mintoft at Redline Components is on board, supply parts at a very charitable rate, Tony Whiting at TSK will facilitate the mechanical work with a team of volunteer experts thoroughly checking the car and submitting it for IVA submission at his new facility in Kent. Neil Barker of Kit Car Direct has kindly offered to assist in the transportation of the car from Lincoln to Kent. We thank these companies for their support and generosity.
It would be nice to see if we've got 250 people willing to put £10 in. Any surplus will be donated back to the school.
Despite the age of the kit we expect the car to be registered on a new 20 or 70 plate. Its a 1.6 Sigma in BRG with a yellow stripe, has black leather seats and will have 14" Minatour wheels. The car will be listed on Marketplace and Ebay for £20,000 once complete. Interested parties can contact us from now and you will be contacted when the car is ready to view.
Appreciate of course some peoples financial circumstances are affected by the Corona Virus Pandemic, and of course it may be hard for those people to donate. I'm still kicking this off with £20 in the kitty from me.
Please join me and please give what you can afford generously!
