Greece with my AP students, or bust!

Donation protected
HI!
I'm Darcy White and I teach World and AP World history in a downtown LA high school. I applied for a grant for the 2024 SUMMER EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS AND UNDERSERVED YOUTH from the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) and was awarded it in mid-December 2023.

Made available through ASCSA's grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, and a first-time program aimed at inner city youth, we are so fortunate to get the funds for 9 days in Athens and Ancient Corinth, Greece. This grant, to be paid directly to vendors for flights, hotels, and transport, should be enough, but I am hoping to also raise in-kind donations.

This is a first-time Greece trip for me, my principal, two other history teachers and 5 of my AP students. We will visit archaeological sites and museums, and engage with expert guest speakers to deepen the students’ understanding of Greece’s landscape, history, literature, and material culture. The program offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the ancient sites, monuments, and culture of Greece first-hand with exclusive access to archaeological sites and storerooms with excavated artifacts.

Throughout my 25-year career in education, from the inner-city of Jacksonville, FL to the Navajo Reservation in northern AZ, and now downtown LA, I have always tried to bring the best experiences to my students, in all the social science courses I have taught. We attended Renaissance Faires, went to Washington, D.C. with the Close-Up Foundation (government policy, etc.) and brought various speakers into my classroom for first-hand experiences and story-telling.

Now, we are heading to the seat of democracy and ancient languages - an indescribable experience for any person, let alone my five AP students. I didn't even really tell anyone that I applied, thinking I had no chance, then came the email a week or so before our semester finals.

The students AND their parents know this may be a once-in-a-lifetime journey, but for me, it's the culmination of a lifetime working with at-risk kids. To be able to bring this amazing opportunity to them- opening their eyes and hearts to the world upon which great democracies and cultures had their beginnings, well, it's just beyond the scope of anything I could have imagined.

We have 6 months to do some little fundraising (candy bars, tee-shirts, etc...), but I thought some extra funds for luggage, sun hats, and other miscellaneous expenses (meals, metro cards for trains/subways, museum admissions) that we may not plan for but will have time to explore, would provide a decent cushion for the students.

I am hoping any amount you can donate, no matter how small, will show your support for what so many of us (teachers) try to create and do for our students along their/our journeys in education.
The funds will go towards paying for transportation while in Greece and food costs for our group.
