Greater Toledo Pool Fund

A few of weeks ago, I left my job in a larger city to be closer to my parents and family.  I was able to find a job that is less like a job, and more like a mission.

In May of 2017, our mill-town community in Toledo, Oregon, whose population is around 3600 people, passed a levy to save their small, recreational community pool. The levy covers operating expenses only, leaving the required improvements to come from grants and donations.

This pool is an area landmark, having the tank initially installed in the 1940s.  It is the pool my 70+ year old mother learned to swim in along with my siblings, cousins, nephews, and nieces and now hopefully the next generation. With your help, families in this community will have the same opportunity I had growing up.

According to ESPN's Richard Lapchick, well-known African-American swimmer Sabir Muhammad says, "No one dies from not being able to play basketball." In other words, swimming is not just exercise; it is a lifesaving skill.  This pool provides opportunity to learn lifesaving skills, allows a place for competitive swim meets, brings the community together for a common goal, and is a healthy means of social interaction.

The job I've taken is one that requires the board, the community, and myself to somehow raise more than 2 million dollars for the necessary renovations to increase safety and provide the significant improvements that are long overdue. This is the only health and wellness service in our community.

Please donate what you can to help us renovate this important landmark and invest in our local community, and the next generation’s future. Your contribution is tax deductible and will be deposited in the Greater Toledo Pool Account of the Toledo Community Foundation.
