Great Men Project

We’re the Great Men project – we run workshops that talk to boys about gender stereotyping, and the often toxic behaviours that result because of it.

In the face of #metoo and the revelations of sexual abuse conducted by men, our work is more relevant – and critical – than ever.

We want to see the next generation of men taking an active role in promoting gender equality. We also use the findings from the workshops to campaign on education and equality policy.

The thing is, we're facing a funding shortfall of £10,000.

Our work is crucial – and we won’t be able to continue as we do now if we don’t close the gap.

Young men are often under a lot of pressure to prove their masculinity in ways that put them and others at risk, and they are influenced by cultural expectations of how girls and boys should behave according to their gender.

Statistically compared to girls, boys are more likely to:

Be violent towards others.
Become addicted to alcohol or drugs,.
Be imprisoned.
Achieve lower grades in school.
Never seek help for mental health problems.

The Great Men workshop challenges boys to think critically about the gender stereotypes that fuel these kinds of behaviors; that ‘real’ men shouldn’t express emotions other than anger or control, that aggression, money and promiscuity are the markers of ‘success’, and that women and homosexual men represent the opposite of these characteristics and should be treated as inferior.

Our workshops work: we’ve run 137 since we started, speaking to thousands of boys. We’re well received by parents and teachers, and we’ve been invited back into lot of schools to deliver follow-on workshops.

We’re a lean organisation: we only have four full time staff, and the workshops are almost entirely run by our dedicated volunteers.

The grants we currently rely on are running out, and so we’re relying on you for some special emergency funding just to help us keep operating while we secure our next round.

Without your support, we’ll have to cut back somewhere. Please donate whatever you can today!
