Our Queenslanders Their second Century

We seeking donations to fund the printing and release of our colourful book “Our Queenslanders, houses ♦gardens: Their Second century”. We are pleading the case for recognition and protection of our architectural heritage. In fact “The Queenslander” may be Australias best known architectural style on the world stage. As well as defining lots of detail, our book describes the experience of living in a “Queenlander’ and illustrates fine urban and rural examples of these houses and gardens. Our book touches on Architecture, History, Horticulture and Queensland identity with lots of illustration.
In the 21st century the pressure to subdivide and repurpose urban land threatens to remove or permanently alter the “Queenslander” which once defined the streetscape and the identity of our towns and cities. Modern tastes and expectations of housing also threaten this vernacular housing style which contributes to Queensland identity.
Your donation will be used to fund some of the printing costs of our book “Our Queenslanders, homes♦gardens: Their second Century" and the accompanying book “Queenslander Gardens, Plants for their Second Century: with Historical References”. We have always aimed to produce a high quality product with our gardening and childrens books published to date. see our website As in the past we intend these A4 books to be hard cover, case bound in full colour. "Our Queenslanders, Their Second Century" is a high quality hard cover book of 400pages which will sell for about $55.
About the Authors
Kyleigh and Michael enjoy sharing their own “Queenslander” house and garden with visitors and have hosted many Open Garden charity days since 2001 including ‘Easter in a Montville Garden’ in 2019 which benefits the Western Queensland Drought Appeal. Over the years many community groups and organizations such as Legacy Australia and the Cittimani Hospice have benefited from their efforts. They enjoy sharing their passion for the “Queenslander” house and garden.
Kyleigh Simpson has qualifications in fine art and teaching. For Kyleigh the garden has been the subject of nine childrens books, six gardening book and an inspiration for ceramic scuptures, paintings and mixed media works and for adult and childrens art workshops. Kyleigh enjoys the process of making and changing the garden with all the physical work this entails. Dr Michael Simpson has qualification in Medicine and Music. The collection and study of plants and the documentation of the garden is his particular interest as is architectural history. For both authors visiting and studying older, historic homes and gardens is a great interest.
Unfortunately, Michael has lived with severe rheumatoid arthritis for forty years complicated by multiple surgeries and now relies on mobility aids and help with even simple tasks. He has reduced work to three mornings per week which means funds to print our books are limited. In spite of all the limitations his enthusiasm for this project is boundless, being the principle researcher.
From our point of view the work to create these books is done but the task of getting them printed is under way. We plan for a limited print run in order to make printing and distribution manageable.
All quotes indicate it will cost $5500 for 100 copies of “Our Queenslanders, homes ♦gardens: Their Second century”, 400 pages, hard cover A4 size to be printed in June 2019. A further $2000 would help print 100 copies of “Queenslander Gardens, Plants for their Second Century: with Historical References”
