Great Big Read - Community Book Pledge
Pop-Up Bookshop is excited to introduce our new reading challenge specifically developed for Dorset schools!
There has been a whirlwind of excitement in the Usborne world recently with Peter Usborne personally launching a #TransformYourSchoolLibrary campaign with the aim to get 500,000 free books into schools this academic year.
Great Big Read aims to ensure a large chunk of these books will benefit Dorset schools and nurseries.
Pop-Up Bookshop is currently recruiting 25 local schools and nurseries to participate in the 2020 Great Big Read challenge which will focus around World Book Day - the most captivating literacy event of the year!
Our Great Big Read 2020 target is to secure a minimum of £40,000 Usborne Books to benefit 25 Dorset educational establishments.
This crowdfunding Community Book Pledge campaign aims to support this goal by raising a minimum of £5,000 donations from local individuals and businesses to help schools reach their targets.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Great Big Read fully engages pupils, teachers, and parents through utilising the well-established Usborne sponsored reading event 'Ready Steady Read'.
- By working directly with Pop-Up Bookshop each school event earns up to 60% FREE Usborne books ON TOP of funds raised; every £1,000 = £1,600 Usborne books.
- The Great Big Read total target amount is £25,000 across 25 Dorset schools equating to an extra £15,000 FREE books donated by Usborne.
- DOES NOT affect limited school budgets - all money raised is through pupil efforts and Community Book Pledge donations.
- ALL money raised (less GoFundMe 2.9% withdrawal fee) is spent on Usborne books for the schools. There are NO hidden costs or Pop-Up Bookshop administration fees.
- Community Book Pledge donations will be divided equally between participating schools to boost number of books each establishment receives.

SUCCESS STORY
"Avonwood Primary School collaborated with Pop-Up Bookshop for a combined sponsored read and book fair event in June 2019. The results were excellent!
The pupil efforts plus Community Book Pledge raised £1,500 which then saw a further £900 of free Usborne books donated on top; we had a total of £2,400 to spend on books which didn't affect our school budget.
Vanessa took a really personal approach by launching the event in assembly, managing all of the admin and payments, and then coming back to wow the children and staff with totals raised!
We are looking forward to working with Pop-Up Bookshop again as part of the Great Big Read challenge."

WHY JOIN GREAT BIG READ?
Great Big Read is facilitated entirely by Pop-Up Bookshop; we take full responsibility for the organisation of each separate school fundraising event, removing pressure from schools.
To reiterate: WE DO ALL THE HARD WORK!
- £40,000 books to phenomenally boost our Dorset education system and help local literacy rates to skyrocket!
- Each event tailored to match exact school requirements. We provide ALL templates: letters to parents, sponsorship forms, reading logs, certificates.
- Whenever possible, we will work digitally with a school to support our environmentally aware ethos and promote sustainability.
- Option to maximise fundraising using virtual book fair add-on.
- We manage ALL the fundraising money; schools don't coordinate, chase, or count!
- We can help schools select their Usborne books.
- We incorporate county-wide fun reading challenges judged by special notable guests.
- Option to apply for an Author Event utilising Usborne fiction authors.
- Access to Usborne teacher resources and book guides.
WHY DONATE TO GREAT BIG READ?
This Community Book Pledge will benefit up to 25 Dorset schools and nurseries and up to 10,000 children! We are planning to make Great Big Read an annual fundraising event to support Dorset schools and to equip our next generation with the very best knowledge enabling them to lead us into a sustainable future to be proud of.
- £40,000 books to phenomenally boost our Dorset education system and help local literacy rates to skyrocket!
- All named individual and business donors will receive recognition in the Great Big Read programme to be distributed to up to 10,000 participating Dorset school and nursery staff and pupils.
-In addition, we will thank all business donations pledging the following amounts with a unique advertising opportunity:
£275 donation (will buy £440 books!) = A5 full-page colour advert
£150 donation (will buy £240 books!) = A5 half-page colour advert
£75 donation (will buy £120 books!) = A5 quarter-page colour advert
Advert dimensions and a booking form will be provided on donation - contact us with specific queries or to discuss business invoice options as an alternative to donating through this platform.
- Business donations will also receive a donor’s poster to proudly display at their work place.
GET INVOLVED
Rather excitingly, we already have 10 local schools and nurseries (as of October 2019) who have expressed interested in participating in Great Big Read 2020. If you know of a school or nursery who will benefit from joining Great Big Read please get in touch.
We are working hard to fulfil our target of 25 schools to ensure we enhance as many pupils lives as possible through access to more books.
