Grateful for Gihan

Galatians 6:2 says “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Bearing your own burdens is already difficult enough with your own insecurities, worries and fatigue—but taking on others’ burdens truly exhausts a person. True love is choosing to feel someone’s pain in order to comfort and support them, showing them they are not alone to improve their welling being.

My mama, Gihan Shehata, truly exemplifies this verse. When her husband and my baba, Ashraf Fanous, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer in January 2012, her state of mind completely changed. Although she was extremely motivated before, she has since been pushing herself to the limit to educate herself about all forms of medicine, diets and lifestyle choices in order to improve Ashraf’s quality of life, all while being the main provider for her household.

Ashraf has undergone over 46 chemotherapy sessions, 4 resections of various organs (Liver/Colon/Lungs], tumor removal procedures, as well as 5 different radiation sessions to different parts of his body. All this physical demand has taken a toll on his physical and mental well-being, preventing him from being able to work since May 2016 (for the second time around). Gihan took a leave of absence from her work (Leon’s sales associate, top of her location) to take care of her husband full-time since April 2017. She has taken great diligence in becoming more financially literate, budgeting properly but has drained all her credit cards, line of credit & savings.

My mother is determined to work herself to the point of bleeding to show her love for husband and it kills him to see the immense stress which she bears. He says he would like her to go back to work, she feels obligated to stay and care for him because wants to show her full commit and service to her husband.

This fund is to show appreciation for and support a hard working, God fearing and loving woman, who is stubborn. I say stubborn for 2 reasons:

1. No circumstance is too overwhelming for her and she will put all her resources out on the line for those she loves and those she doesn’t even know.
She will never ask for help…

2. Asking for help is more than okay - it provides us opportunities to exercise our love for people. It also humbles the person we help - it makes them realize that one person can not do everything on their own, and makes them thankful for all those who care for them because they may not realize it but there’s an incredible amount of people who are willing to help.  I want Gihan to understand that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but in seeing her own weakness this allows for her own personal growth-Just as you show your love, let others show their love towards you-it is a team effort.

I cannot express enough gratitude to all those of you took the time to read this, it means the world to my family and me. If you are able to spare anything, it would be greatly appreciated, and regardless please pray for us. We love you all and show love in all aspects of your life, in doing so you become a miracle to those who are willing to receive a miracle.
