Grant for Jewish Foundation Study

Donation protected
My wife Kathryn Gholston, a middle school educator, began working with and studying through the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous over six years ago.  For those of you who aren't famillar with the JFR they are a group based out of New York that provide financial support to aged and needy non-Jews who rescued Jews during the Holocaust and preserves their legacy through a national education program. Needless to say, they have provided Kate with many opportunities to attend seminars, hear speakers, and participate in world wide discussions concerning an array of topics.

Through her studies she has been able to expand not only her knowledge of these subjects, but has been fortunate to take these cultural experiences into her classroom and pass them along to her students.

I present this request to you becuase, Kate would love nothing more than to take on the JFR Summer Seminar experience. Unfortunately, with the salary of two school teachers, a seminar that is held in Europe is outside the range of our budget.  The JFR of New York City with the assitance of the Birmigham Alabama Holocaust Center has the entire trip set up, and the approximate cost is $3,500. I humbly request that you help make my wife's (and educator for fifteen plus years) dream come true, and send her to Europe this summer for this amazing educational experience.

BELOW IS SOME INFORMATION FROM THE JFR WEBSITE:
The European Study Program in Germany and Poland offers participants an intensive educational experience. The first European Study Program was held in July 2003 and the second in 2004. The JFR then decided to offer the program every other year. In 2015, the JFR European Study Program will spend a week in Germany and a week in Poland. Participation is open to Alfred Lerner Fellows who have been nominated by their local Holocaust center. The two-week program, which is limited to fifteen Lerner Fellows, includes visits to concentration camps, ghetto sites, and meetings with survivors, rescuers, local historians, and teachers. Robert Jan van Pelt is the accompanying scholar for the European Study Program. Participants are expected to complete required readings prior to the start of the program. The journey ends in Auschwitz, where the group spends four days visiting Auschwitz and Birkenau and examining documents in the archives. Participants have the opportunity to review what they learned during their time in Germany and Poland. The program allows the group to discuss approaches to teaching the Holocaust and to reflect on their experience before departing for home. While there is a participant fee, the JFR provides a significant subsidy for each participant. The JFR is appreciative of the generous financial support it receives from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) for the above three programs.
