Grand Little Big Band Donations

In April of 2013, a Grand Rapids Montessori music teacher and a mom of two talented young musicians had an idea: why not cut middle schoolers loose to plunge headlong into learning the iconic swing, blues, jazz, and big band music from the 40s? During a meeting of interested families, a mom wanted to know if parents could join. That sounded like a good idea to everyone and so the band became multigenerational, and the Grand Little Big Band was born.
After very humble beginnings, we have seen our group gain momentum, confidence, and skill, acquiring some great musicians from every age from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Now, however, many of our musicians make the trek from Whitehall and Howard City areas to be a part of our band practices every week, and we have definitely become an exciting West Michigan experience! Something else is special. If you sit in our rehearsals, you’ll see more experienced musicians mentoring the younger ones, encouraging one another, learning some great scores from Glenn Miller, Count Basie, and Cole Porter, just to name a few.
We are on an amazing journey, and this is what we are discovering along the way: there is something magic about music; it transcends language, culture, background, and, in our case, generations; it brings people together, families together, communities together and yes, even the world together.
