Graduate Course in Paraguay

Donation protected
As many of you know I am currently in the process of getting my graduate degree through Project Dragonfly and Miami University of Ohio. By January 2019 I will have earned an M.A. in Biology with a focus on Early Environmental Education

Through my graduate program, Miami University offers a special learning opportunity called an Earth Expedition.

What is an Earth Expedition?

Earth Expeditions are a global program supporting university courses, degree programs, and collaborative projects making a difference in countries and communities around the world.

Via the Earth Expedition, I will travel to an ecological and conservation hotspot to engage in inquiry and action projects while developing new approaches to address the vital issues of our time. This will also allow me to build relationships with leading educators, community leaders, and conservationists from around the world.

What I'll be doing for my Earth Expedition

For my Earth Expedition, I am heading to Paraguay. While there I will have the unique opportunity to co-develop an Eco-Leadership program working in partnership with Para La Tierra (PLT), a nonprofit conservation organization devoted to scientific research, conservation, and community engagement. Learning objectives include: developing methods for assessing wildlife populations; develop public exhibits, participatory media, and community events celebrating local biota; evaluate both educational and ecological outcomes, among others.

What your donations will go to

$2,675 - Field course (in-country + web-based component, including tuition for 5 graduate credits and in-country costs)*

$1,800 - airfare to Asunción, Paraguay

$170 - Entry fee to get into Paraguay

$600 - Fall project course (includes tuition for 2 graduate credits)

$500 - additional course support costs.

Total: $5,745

*In addition to covering the price for five graduate credits of Miami University tuition, field course costs cover all basic expenses, including:

Meals
Lodging
Field station fees
Field equipment (as needed)
Ground transportation (van, boat, train, etc., as needed)
Park entrance and guide fees
Course reader
*NOTE: The Paraguay course carries a required extra charge to cover additional course support costs.

What are these "additional course support costs"?

Through discussions I've had with classmates who have been on eart expeditions, this covers anything that isn't explicitely listed. This can include things like renewing my passport, the entry visa fee, exit tax, and/or a hotel room if I fly in before the course starts (recommended by many people who have done these before).

What is this wishlist?

My Amazon Wishlist

Another way to support me during this step closer to my graduate degree is to help me purchase items I'll need. This wishlist contains items that do not directly relate to tuition, airfare or field costs. These are mostly travel necessities such as bags, clothing, toiletries and other items.

Going down to South America can be dicey for a young woman, especially since Zika is still a threat down there. Many items are bug-repellent clothing and ways to make items bug-repellent to reduce the possibility of contracting zika.

Other funding:

I am currently looking into support from grants. Sadly my employer does not offer any professional development or tuition support.
