Helping A Selfless Mother Rest

Donation protected
Update 08/29/2017 9:33 AM: I was informed this morning that my mother has passed away. Her heart gave out at 3:15 AM. She's at rest now. We're currently making arrangements for her ceremony.

She's survived by her children: Olakunmi Johnson, Adewunmi Johnson, and Samuel Adaramola

On July 28th, my mother went to the hospital to undergo a medical procedure. During that procedure, her heart stopped where she remained unresponsive for 15 minutes before the medical team was able to bring her back. Without having her heart pumping blood and oxygen to her brain, she suffered from severe brain damage. Since then, she’s been on life support, unable to breathe or function on her own. Every doctor the family has spoken with have all given a grim prognosis. As one doctor put it, “she has less than a 1% chance of recovering to a meaningful life.” Hearing this news about my mother was extremely painful. Visiting her in this state is even more painful.

My mother has been battling her disabilities for a very long time; making the best of her life while dealing with the complications of diabetes. For over 10 years she's had to deal with kidney disease and blindness in one eye, all while being an amputee. But through it all, she remained the kindest and most generous person I know. I'm saying this because I've witnessed her generosity to people who were not even her family. She’s given her last dime to people in need. She opened her home to people who didn’t have anywhere to go. She helped put me through school by sacrificing her disability checks. My mother is the definition of selfless.

I’m writing this to you all with tears in my eyes. I know how much she has been through, and she doesn’t deserve this. That’s why my family, with extremely heavy hearts, have decided that we will allow her to pass peacefully, instead of witnessing her endure more suffering. When that time comes, we will lay her to rest, so she can finally be at peace.

I’m grateful that as her son, I have been able to provide for her. But there are things I just can’t do on my own. That's why, on behalf of my family, I'm asking for your kindness to help us lay her to rest in a manner that she deserves. Your donation will help cover the cost of her memorial and burial.
