Transforming the Homeless
As many of you know, myself and some extraordinary people have been operating a nonprofit group for the last 5 years, affectionately know as "Gourmet Friends." Every month, we provide a gourmet lunch for homeless and abused women at The Downtown Women's Center ( www.dwcweb.org). The center is an amazing oasis that has been impacting the homeless environment in downtown Los Angeles since 1978.
We cook up something extra special, beyond what the ladies usually receive.
Some of our meals in the past:
*Grilled steak / corn cob / salad / vanilla ice cream w/ strawberries.
*Coconut Chicken / fresh pineapple / carrot, apple, salad / baked bananas w syrup
*Cuban steak w pineapple salsa / fried plaintains / black bean salad / strawberry shortcake
*Pasta bar with 4 types of pasta and 4 types of sauces.
*Soul Food- Hopping John (soup with ham hocks, black-eyed peas, and greens)/ corn bread / coleslaw/ yams with nut and marshmallow garnish
*French Crepes topped with a choice of gourmet meats, cheeses and a mushroom sauce/ salad/ French onion soup
*Indian Faire- including: Sag Paneer /Chana Masala/ Chicken Tiki Masala/ Vehetable Korma/ Cumin infused Basmati Rice/ Naan
Currently we feed around 125 people and are responsible for covering the food costs of around $250-300 per month. The center has moved to a larger location recently and we are have experienced an increase in the number of people we have been serving. We are already struggling to come up with the funds and keep up with the increase in participation - so we need your support to keep us going!
We would also love to expand our group by providing additional meals, teaching healthy cooking classes, going into additional homeless centers and have enough support to serve the ladies restaurant style - the possibilities could really be endless with some additional financial support!
