Our goal is to have educational workshops in cast iron sculpture at the Goree Island Diaspora Festival.

Students in the workshop will make patterns and molds, build and operate a traditional Cupola Furnace and cast a take-home iron sculpture of their own! This is just part of how this project will help facilitate cultural exchange between colleges and universities across Senegal and the USA.
Anyone who has shared in a cast iron project this immersive is in my experience undoubtedly changed! Over the years I have seen students transformed, each in a slightly different way. But in a way that can be summed up in one phrase “as an Awakening”!

On Goree we can meet with our partner, Mayor Senghor - Goree Island, students, Artist Amadou Yacine THIAM, Art Consultant, of YASSINE Art Center Hotel - Kerr Gainde, Dakar and other local artists and business owners including our collaborator Lamine Gueye not to mention our MANY friends in Senegal to plan for the Cast Iron Workshop at the 2019 Gorée Island Festival.
Once there we can find local materials and supplies for the 2019 workshop, something we can not do without being there!

Gorée Chi-Wara Project
In the early 1990’s construction was halted on a site near City Hall in Manhattan when a 17th and 18th century African Burial Ground was discovered. Today close to the site is the commemorative Chi-Wara effigy by Dr. Lorenzo Pace entitled
Triumph of the Human Spirit
Chi-Wara are ancient stylized antelope figures of West African origin. They are paired male and female representing the fertility of the earth and the fertility of humankind. They are symbolic of survival.
The work was commissioned by the City of New York and completed by Dr. Pace in 2000. Rising five stories above a circular fountain is a 300-ton
abstract female antelope figure standing on a ship-form representing the African Diaspora and the middle passage.
The Gorée Chi-Ware has been a long time dream of Lorenzo’s.
The New York statue is made of 300 tons of granite. The Goree Sculpture would be cast in a “stainless” grade of Ductile Iron or Steel. Selecting a grade that is immune to rust and a perfect medium for the salt air on the island so maintenance costs would be reduced.
Dr Pace has partnered with Artist and Foundry Expert Phillip Harrison of Penumbra Design for concept development and construction.

Phillip is an artist, sculptor, designer, educator, industrial manufacturing consultant, and design/build architecture professional.
He established Penumbra Design in 1988 as a Design/Build Studio. Projects range in media type and scale, from holographic artwork to engineered cast metals and composites for aviation and ground transportation. Other production includes decorative forgings and architectural installations.
Penumbra Design endeavors span design, production, and installation of public art sculpture. Phillip lectures, and gives demonstrations on historic trades, preservation, and industrial manufacturing technologies.
He also conducts fine art and architectural sculpture seminars at educational institutions across the country. He has worked on restoration projects in France and Great Britain and across the USA . As a contributing artist on the Globe Theater Restoration Project in London he received The Viscount Tonypandy Cup
Dr. Lorenzo Pace
The Artistict Director of the program and co-designer of the Goree Island Sculptures.
Lorenzo is an artist, author, master storyteller and performance artist, and lecturer. Pace held his first exhibition at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, where he graduated with both a BFA and an MFA. Pace went on to receive a doctorate in art education from Illinois State University and later made his home in New York City.
Pace works with a broad range of objects and materials. His sculptures, installations and performance art have received international acclaim. He has exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world, including New York City, the National Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham, AL, as well as galleries in China, Brazil, Senegal, Suriname, Peru, and France. Pace has been featured in a variety of media, including the New York Times and New York Arts Magazine.
In 1993, Pace and his artwork skyrocketed to national attention when he was commissioned to build a monument at New York City’s Foley Square paying homage to the African slaves originally buried on that site. The City of New York wanted to create a memorial and Pace was UIKeyInputDownArrowchosen. His work resulted in a beautiful 300-ton granite sculpture named “Triumph of the Human Spirit.” A replica of the lock that shackled Pace’s great-great grandfather, Steve Pace, is a part of the base of the monument.
Pace is known as a master storyteller and performance artist. His book performances are full of music, singing, dancing, joy, and laughter. Pace has served as Director of the Montclair State University Art Gallery, a Professor of Art at the University of Texas – Rio Grande, and maintains a studio in Brooklyn, New York.Working in diverse media, the artist has dedicated particular attention to themes of voodoo, African iconography and urban issues. His work has been exhibited widely, including at the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los
