Gooneys Road to Recovery & Back To Boxing

Gooney is 14 years old and has dreams of becoming a professional boxer. He’s been training since he was 8 years old. He is self-disciplined and passionate about boxing. He trains Monday through Thursday for 3 hours and runs every Saturday.

Unfortunately, on Friday, May 23rd, around 6 pm, he was in a dirt bike accident. His throttle got stuck, throwing the bike into a wheelie. Unable to land the bike safely, the bike crushed his leg, leading to a broken tibia and fibula right under his left knee.

The ambulance arrived and, without a parent's consent, gave him a dose of Fentanyl, which according to the EMT, “was no big deal.” Upon arriving at the ER, he was scheduled for a CT scan. The techs decided to do an X-ray, where we saw his bone was indeed broken. We were informed we would be transferred to Northridge Hospital where Gooney would have surgery done. AV Hospital put a splint on his leg, which was not done properly. On Saturday, May 24th, around 3:00 am, we arrived at Northridge Hospital where Gooney was admitted, and now we would wait for the orthopedic surgeon to see him in the morning. Northridge Hospital did their own X-rays, and in the morning, I was told he would not be having surgery but be going home with nothing but a splint for 1-2 weeks. As any mother would, I argued that this didn’t sound right. My son had broken bones but was to be taken home with not even a cast? Aside from no surgery, no cast, the hospital wanted him to complete physical therapy with a broken leg. They tried to force him to stand and walk on crutches, but he couldn’t. He screamed and cried in pain until they realized it wouldn’t happen.

We were discharged on Saturday night. Gooney has been at home, in bed since; unable to move, shower, and with no pain medicine other than Tylenol. I contacted the orthopedic surgeon that saw him in 2022 when he broke his ankle, but unfortunately, his insurance is not accepted, and he would be going in as a cash-paying patient.

Julian and I are not people who ask for help, much less money, but this is our son's health and well-being, and as parents, we will go to any extent for them. We are asking for help from anyone who can donate anything, to please help us get our baby boy to the right doctor for a second opinion and back to doing what he loves... boxing! If you are unable to donate, we understand; just keep our boy in your prayers.
