"Don't complain about the thorns among the roses, be grateful for the roses among the thorns"My name is Rebecca Easom and I was adopted from the Good Shepherd Convent in Nayakakanda, Sri Lanka 24 years ago. I am in the very privelaged position to be able to live in Sydney Australia surrounded by my family with constant love and support.In 2012 I made my first trip back to Sri Lanka, in the hope of discovering more about the culture, people, traditions and part of my own history. I spent time visiting the Good Shepherd Convent of which I spent the first five weeks of my life. It was an eye opening experience to say the least. My sister and I were greeted by the Nuns, who generously offered their time, resources and hearts to us during our visit.
Many of the young girls who are in the convent remain there until they have completed their high school diploma. Their studies are of the utmost importance to their ongoing growth and development, however gross underfunding means quite often they are running off the smell of an oily rag.
For a country rocked by decades of political unrest and natural disasters which left many of their people displaced, i've never met a group radiating so much positivity. The girls are showered with love and kindness and rely on the generosity of strangers for many of the bare essentials.
In my first visit, my sister and I donated $200, of which the sisters invested in plastic chairs for the girls - as prior to the donation, hours of schoolwork were completed sitting on the concrete floors.
I'm returning in July 2017 and would like to take a donation with me to show my appreciation to the convent for giving me a start in life and for their continued work in creating a safe and loving environment. I would love if you could make a small contribution to such a worthy cause which has impacted my own life so greatly.
