Hello friends. As some of you may know I spent 6 weeks down in Guatemala last summer working with Antigua Exotic an environmental education and conservation non-profit located in a small village an hour outside of Antigua devoted to the conservation and rehabilitation of exotic species. It serves as a sanctuary to more than 300 animals from throughout the country, including birds, crocodiles, turtles, snakes and any other animal that needs protection and/or rehabilitation. For the past two generations, the Mazariegos family has worked tirelessly to positively impact not only the animals but also the community by teaching kids in their village and from surrounding villages about the importance of co-existing with these beautiful creatures. Somehow, the family supports themselves as well as maintaining the facilities, feeding and caring for the animals, and educating the community with only $7,000 a year. It’s a constant struggle. If they’re not able to make ends meet, these animals literally have no hope for survival. I want to make sure this important work continues. I’m launching a fundraiser with a goal to raise $5,000 for Antigua Exotic. I spoke with Señor Mazariegos about his most urgent needs and they include creating more enclosures and habitats for the animals repairing and improving the facilities. In addition, he would organize more community outreach programs and buy new biology textbooks for the local school kids. The long term goal is to expand the facilities so he could protect and rehabilitate even more animals. I will be returning to Guatemala in June to continue the work I started last Summer.
