Building a Library for the kids of Heskit Jamaica

Tax deductible

WELCOME!

Let me introduce myself.

I am Pastor Salome Pathak. I am a Missionary with The North American Lutheran Church based in the U.S.
I do missionary work in Jamaica where I was born and where I grew up.  Our Jamaica Mission-base is located in Good Hope. It is what you would call the boondocks of the Negril Hills.

Good Hope is joined by several communities in the rural hills of Negril two of which are HESKIT and Mt. Airey.

Let me tell you a little about Heskit and Mt. Airey.
Firstly, Mt. Airey was the place where all little school age boys and girls went to school. Our All-age school there, was run by the Anglican Church. On Sundays school children could go to the Anglican Church and during the week attend the Anglican Church School.

In the picture above, on the right, I am standing with school children who attend the Anglican Church in Mt. Airey. This is the same Church that held the all-age church-school decades ago.
When I was a little girl, I attended school in this same church building although now much improved.

Today, the All-age School is no longer part of the Mt. Airey Anglican Church. School children now have a new school building nestled in the community of Heskit. It is called the Heskit -Mt. Airey All-age School. All school age children from the neighboring communities attend this school.

Today, there is a great need for a Library for Heskit where all the school children from the Heskit-Mt. Airey all-age school and the neighboring communities can gain access to educational resources.

I have seen and experienced the lack of access to educational resources that would promote literacy for both school-age children, non-school-age children, and adults. I have seen children walk miles away from the Heskit-Mt. Airey school community, Good Hope Community and the surrounding communities to find a library and access to computers that would meet their study need. These are resources that are essential to their educational development and learning skills.

Even though these children do not have easy access to a library and to computers they participate in Junior Quiz competitions and time to time win. They competed with schools where some have access to resources that they do not have.  Imagine what these rural kids could accomplish if they have free access to a library with various appropriate educational books, computers and other educational material.

I worked for a long time as a missionary in some of these communities. And I have seen the great need the children are experiencing as we extend a helping hand in giving school supplies, back-packs, clothes, shoes, food stuff, and help teens who travel away from home to their designated high school among other things.

There is a great need for a library.
I am asking you to help me put in place a Library for the community of Heskit, Good Hope, Mt. Airey and the surrounding communities.

When I was a young mother, I gave my time to foster the wellbeing and education of school age children and youths. Back then, you would have found me volunteering as a Crossing Guard at my children’ elementary school crossing in the US. Today it’s vacation Bible Schools, providing educational training for kids, giving out back-to-school supplies, clothes, foods stuff as well as other crucial supports.

My children and grandchildren today, follow in my footstep and advocate for school age children’s education and after school programs and curriculums.
