We Support Nena's Vision

Nena Dorsey is an outstanding young lady. As a recent graduate from Grady High School, she was voted ‘The Best Overall Student,’ and if you know Nena, it’s easy to see why… Not only did she serve as chief editor of her high school yearbook, she was also president of her school’s peer leaders program, supporting incoming freshmen during transition. A senior guide they could turn to. Along with this, Nena also dedicated free time in her schedule to take on college level courses to better prepare for her future. To those around her, Nena is a true role model. She is often described as the most positive and cheerful person you could ever meet.

What many don’t know about Nena, however, is that during this time she was also fighting a battle. The most difficult one of her life. In October of 2011, during her freshman year of high school, Nena’s mother Mecca was diagnosed with breast cancer. By October 2013, it had progressed to stage 4. The family was given news it was considered terminal and Nena’s mother wasn’t given long to live. Mecca fought this battle courageously to be there for her daughters throughout these difficult years. And Nena would be right there, by her mother’s side.

During this time, Nena took on ever-increasing responsibilities around the house, from helping take care of her 3-year-old sister Nilani, to helping run the family business. To being a teenager and everything in between. Nena somehow managed to keep her GPA up despite missing several days of school, to be with her ailing mother. Throughout it all, Nena’s resilience and ability to keep a positive attitude has shown through as qualities most people simply just don’t possess.  Everyone in her family is in awe of Nena’s ability to “keep it together” in the face of such challenging circumstances.

When Mecca passed in September 2014, it came unexpectedly. It was a devastating blow to the whole family, especially to Nena, who was now without any blood relatives nearby. With her closest family in Pittsburgh and what can only be described as a crippling void that is created with the loss of ones mother, one can only imagine how challenging it was for Nena to finish her senior year, much less to achieve all of the amazing things that she’s accomplished.

Nena is now about to embark on to the next significant phase of her life, to pursue her career in medicine. And we can’t be any prouder. She’s been accepted in to the prestigious Xavier University in Louisiana, a historically black university that’s ranked in the top tier of colleges, sending their students well prepared for medical school. Nena plans on transforming the world through her work in this field. Her desire to focus on the healing of Original peoples’ mental illnesses by changing the ways in which they are diagnosed and treated is inspirational. This work in mental health is needed for the many psychological conditions that affect us all. Our greatest natural resource as a youth, dedicated to her path and future as a woman of influence.

Nena’s ability to make sense of her own situation, to rise above her circumstances, and to cope with her pain in such a way can only be described in one word: Powerful. She is a shining light to everyone who knows her. We’d like to send her off to college without the burden of debt that’s normally associated with such a venture. We want to give her an ease of life that we feel she deserves. We also want to give her the best and see her have the best life that she can, to see her live out her purpose and to continue living out her dreams. Anything that you can give towards this fund goes to an outstanding young lady, and we are very grateful for any of your contributions. This is for Nena. And for her unceasing vision for a better world. Peace.
