Oak Wilt Containment Project

Donation protected
Goldenwood Subdivision was named after a large, beautiful oak tree in our neighborhood.  That tree and many others, provide shade, habitats for a wide variety of Central Texas plants and animals, and enhanced property values for every homeowner.

One of our neighborhood’s greatest assets, our oaks, are being threatened, and we need your help!  Currently, six of our neighbors on Rivendell Ln have or are at risk of getting oak wilt infection—a terminal, fungal disease that spreads through tree roots.  If left untreated, the infection can spread throughout our neighborhood.

Oak wilt containment is costly and requires multiple steps including tree injections, trenching around infected trees and brush removal.  Oak wilt experts agree that the best approach to containing the disease is to trench all affected properties at one time.  By working together and coordinating our efforts, we will also qualify for a Texas Forestry Service Cost-Share grant.

Trenching on Rivendell Ln properties will begin in mid-September and last for about two weeks.  Our goal is to assist each homeowner with all associated costs.

·         The budget for the entire project is estimated to be $19,500 .

·         The Goldenwood Board of Trustees has voted to provide $2,000  from non-dues revenue.

·         The Forestry grant will provide $3,000.

·         Our fundraising goal is $14,500.

The owners impacted by this oak wilt infection and those who attended two recent meetings believe the oak wilt issue is a community-wide problem and not just an unfortunate circumstance for a handful of residents. Many of those in attendance have pledged money and  volunteered their time to help address this expanding problem.

Should we exceed our fundraising goal, monies raised will be set aside in a permanent oak wilt fund.  If we fall short, affected homeowners will be required to pay the remaining amount in pro-rata shares based on the amount of trenching on their respective properties.

The fundraising deadline is October 5, 2018.  In the meantime, we’ll keep you updated on our progress.
